When Sarah Kemp pursued the Bellevue University Master of Healthcare Administration program, she never imagined that the experience would also help guide her through one of the most challenging times of her life. The skills and information she acquired throughout her program equipped her to excel in her career while also addressing family medical situations.

Taking on a New Challenge

While working in home care as a supervisor, coordinating care and supporting caregivers, Kemp felt she could do more. “I wanted to better understand how I could make a bigger difference; not just in day-to-day operations, but in improving systems and outcomes for patients and families,” she said.

As Kemp explored options, she found Bellevue University through her supervisor and a partnership with her company. “I needed a program that would allow me to continue working while still pushing me to grow,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do more, but I needed the education and structure to get there.”

Real Life Collides With Learning

Kemp quickly learned that she’d apply her MHA program in more ways than she thought. “Very early in the program, my motivation became much more personal,” she said.

Her stepmother experienced a stroke during the first semester of her program. “I saw moments where quality was not maintained, staffing was short, concerns from families were not always heard, and symptoms were sometimes overlooked, which led to complications that could have been prevented,” she said.

During the same time period, Kemp’s father experienced a rapid health decline due to complications of several conditions. “I was balancing school, a full-time job, and traveling two hours one way each week to help support them,” she said. “That season included navigating hospital care, doctor visits, hospice, and stroke recovery, while also helping both sides of my family understand how to care for both of them.”

She continued to address several additional family health and life challenges, including guiding her mother and sister through end-of-life care decisions and bringing hospice in for her stepfather, who passed away in May 2025.

“Living through all of this while studying healthcare gave me a completely different perspective,” Kemp said. “In a way, the schoolwork grounded me. It also made everything I was learning real, urgent and deeply meaningful.”

Gaining Takeaways From the Beginning

Kemp said the MHA program provided immediately applicable content. “The program helped me think more critically about healthcare systems, quality, and leadership,” she said. “It gave me language, structure and confidence in moments that were otherwise overwhelming.”

She said her professors were also helpful beyond the classroom. “I was incredibly fortunate to have professors who were understanding and supportive, which made a lasting impact on me,” she said.

Maintaining a Patient Focus While Growing Professionally

Kemp is now a scheduling manager, supporting home and community-based care across three counties. She returned to home healthcare after serving in a hospital scheduling role during her MHA program.

“I wanted to gain more exposure to the clinical and administrative side of healthcare,” she said. “Although that experience was valuable, I found myself missing the purpose-driven work I felt in home care; especially supporting seniors, veterans and those impacted by Alzheimer's disease.”

Kemp said her current role has expanded her impact while allowing her to connect with the populations she is most passionate about serving. Directly aligned with this, she said earning her MHA has helped her grow from managing day-to-day tasks to understanding and improving the systems behind them.

“It has strengthened my leadership skills, my decision-making and my ability to think more strategically about how care is delivered,” she said. “This experience has reinforced why I chose this field in the first place.”

Kemp also said earning her graduate degree is an accomplishment of resilience. “There were many moments where finishing or taking a break would have been easy, but I didn't. I am incredibly proud of that,” she said. ”The love and support of my family, my partner Evan, and even the quiet comfort of my two dogs carried me through some of the hardest moments.”

Spend a few minutes talking with Marissa Decker and one thing becomes clear: she knows exactly who she is.

She describes herself as sensitive, high-energy, bold, occasionally edgy and, above all, a storyteller. For years, she questioned whether those qualities belonged in a corporate environment. Today, those very qualities are driving her success.

Working for Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD) since 2015, Decker collaborates with contractors and engineers to improve customer satisfaction in her position as Business Development Builders Clerk. While the role is firmly rooted in a professional, service-driven environment, she has stretched beyond traditional boundaries, especially while completing her Bachelor of Science in Marketing degree at Bellevue University.

In addition to her full-time role, she took on an internal volunteer role within the organization in late 2025 as a creative content marketing lead for the Cultural Employee Resource Group (CERG). However, what began as a simple volunteer gig became a defining lesson.

Decker has always been drawn to storytelling, graphic design, and content marketing. What she sought from Bellevue University was the structure behind that passion.

“I have experience. I have knowledge. I have the creative human touch. But I wanted those advanced skills and a deeper understanding of marketing,” she said. “Now I have credibility because I earned my degree.”

Through her coursework, she learned to pair creative instinct with strategic thinking—analyzing audiences, building campaigns and measuring impact. That combination proved transformative.

While working with the ERG, Decker began creating content designed to connect employees, educate the workforce and strengthen culture. Her work aligns with organizational branding standards while bringing warmth, personality and humanity into corporate communications.

Marketing with Empathy

At the core of Decker’s approach is a simple belief: good marketing starts with understanding people.

"You can't be a marketer if you don't ask questions and genuinely care," she said. "You can't serve your audience if you don't understand them."

That mindset shapes everything she creates.

Her newsletters don’t simply share information—they tell stories. When launching a new internal publication, she invited employees to help name it. The final choice, Culture Connect, reflected a shared vision. For an engagement initiative, she developed a global travel-themed campaign that tied into the current “passport program,” which employees collect stamps and points for participation. Decker designs personalized stamps for each event and colorful promotional materials to engage members with intentionality.

In fact, one profile in the program highlighted a colleague from Nigeria and included guidance on how to pronounce his name. It was a small but meaningful detail rooted in respect and inclusion while still being modern, fun, and educational.

"I can physically see people engaging with my work and how it makes them feel valued," she said. "I found my purpose."

That purpose was further recognized when Decker earned a Pinnacle Award from the American Marketing Association Omaha Chapter. Her winning project was one she completed during her time at Bellevue, and it focused on a social media strategy targeting an untapped audience: men interested in skincare. The project combined research, audience analysis, risk assessment, strategic planning and graphic design.

Decker credits Bellevue University faculty member Dr. Randa Zalman for helping elevate her work and being a mentor who saw her talents and encouraged her to put her work out there.

"I've never had a teacher personally reach out and say, 'Marissa, I want you to know you have a gift,'" Decker said. “It's really motivating to have a professor who sees your talents and provides detailed feedback on how to improve. But also provides the tools to be successful and genuinely cares about your wellbeing.”

An Academic and Career Journey to Be Proud Of

Decker’s journey extends beyond awards.

She is a first-generation college graduate who worked full-time while earning her degree. During that time, she also purchased her own home, maintained a 4.0 GPA and earned Dean’s List honors.

"I went from being a college dropout to being recognized as the winner of the Pinnacle Award," she said.

"I felt like a failure at one point in life, constantly comparing myself to others," she said. "Now I'm very confident in so many aspects of my life, seeing what I am capable of and so blessed I went back to school, met amazing people, secured my degree, and chose myself."

That confidence has created momentum beyond the workplace. Her work at MUD and involvement with the ERG have led to freelance opportunities and new ways to apply her skills.

But for Decker, success isn’t defined by recognition. It’s defined by connection.

"I help people feel seen and heard," she said.

And in a field often driven by metrics and dashboards, she’s found something equally powerful. "I am authentically me in everything I do," she said.

Hoke’s journey to earning her MHA began when she returned to the workforce in 2014 after taking time to raise her three girls, soon realizing that continuing her education would be essential to achieving her career goals. “I needed a program that would fit into my life, which was already busy with my girls and working full time,” she said. “The level of engagement and availability from the professors built my confidence and pushed me to succeed.”

Similar to Hoke, Vacarro knew a leadership position would require more education. During her program, Vaccaro worked closely with Hoke during her Organizational Delivery and Design course, with the two ultimately meeting in person at the graduation open house in January.

Following graduation, Hoke offered Vaccaro a role as Credentialing Coordinator at Midlands Choice, where Hoke works as the Director of Credentialing & Compliance.

“I knew that Shannon would be a great candidate for the position,” Hoke said. “I am excited for the opportunity to work with her in this new capacity and am grateful for the connection formed through the MHA program.”

Vaccaro said she has already seen the impact her graduate program is making in her new role. “I am using my problem-solving skills in a new way and really try to integrate how my role impacts the organization,” she said.

She also said Hoke’s mentorship has made an undeniable impact. “Jenn was a pivotal reason I decided to make the leap into the position at Midlands Choice,” Vaccaro said. “Because of my experience with Jenn at Bellevue University, and because of the MHA program itself, I had the confidence to take on a new role that was outside of my comfort zone.”

Angie Biester had to make a pivotal choice early on between opportunity and education, but with patience, she was able to excel at both. Accepting a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) after high school, she completed her bachelor’s degree years later through a  Bellevue University accelerated degree completion program, an option that was almost unheard of at the time.

Biester learned of a stay-in-school position with the Farm Service Agency (FSA), a division of the USDA, after completing high school in Clay Center, Nebraska. Over the next decade, she earned her associate’s degree while helping Nebraska farmers with loans and financial assistance programs.

“It’s hard to put into words how much it means to me that the accelerated program was available. Today, Irish serves as chief operating officer at Harrison Financial Services in Omaha, where she oversees strategic operations and the people systems that support performance and culture. At a smaller firm, the role requires both big-picture thinking and hands-on involvement.

“I wear a lot of hats,” Irish said. “In a smaller organization, there are a lot of nuances. You’re involved in everything.”

It’s a position shaped by years of experience in leadership, learning and talent development – and by the education she completed through Bellevue University.

A career shaped by people

Throughout her career, Irish has gravitated toward work centered on people, developing leaders, strengthening teams and building cultures where employees can grow. She built progressive leadership experience at organizations including WoodmenLife, Farm Bureau, ConAgra Foods, Lincoln Financial Group and Carson Group.

Making Strides in the Military

Originally from Seward, Neb., Noe attended a local university after high school. However, when it became quite expensive to continue after two years, his now-wife suggested the U.S. Air Force. That would set the course for his journey.

Noe was looking forward to traveling the world, but instead served his first six years at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue. Succeeding in his career and education simultaneously was a struggle at the time.

Noe separated from active duty last year after 10 years of service and is now serving in the Air National Guard. I can connect with people implementing leadership programs the way I want to,” he said. “It reframed my world and my thinking.”

Noe is even getting straight A’s for the first time in his life. “I even made the dean’s list multiple times and will graduate with honors,” he said.

Noe is now taking steps to make an even bigger impact with his leadership expertise. Building on his military background, Noe has designed experiential leadership development frameworks that help teams build trust, make decisions under pressure, and communicate more effectively—several of which he has already piloted with local organizations.

Navigating Life’s Obstacles

Archer planned on serving as a military officer after earning her four-year degree. “I’d always wanted to serve in the military and I wanted to go in as an officer,” she said.

However, when changing student loan restrictions halted her undergraduate studies after three years, she entered the United States Air Force as an enlisted member.

This change did not deter her forward progress. After serving for four years as a load planner on the flight line, she transitioned to a legal role where she learned about personnel issues across Air Force occupations. “I saw common factors across jobs,” she said.

These experiences shaped her next educational goal: to earn a master’s degree in human resources and organization development after completing her bachelor’s degree in business management.

Serving as a Civilian

Archer stepped down from the military after nine years due to medical reasons, but the experience and knowledge she walked away with proved invaluable. “It gave me a foot in the door to work for the federal government,” she said.

She moved into human resources information systems, then staffing and recruiting. In her most recent role, she assists service members across the West Coast as a reasonable accommodation specialist for the Veterans Healthcare Administration.

Next Level Education

Having found much success, Archer still felt called by her love of learning. “I’m such an avid learner,” she said. “It’s humbling. The more I learn, the more I find out I don’t know.”

“I was able to bring my experience to light, knowing that we need more research on what service linemen go through,” she said. “I had the background and culture knowledge needed for literature and research, as well the experience in information systems that taught me a data-driven approach.”

She said the accelerated format also fit her needs. “Timing-wise it was perfect for me,” Archer said. “I was pregnant and motivated to wrap it up before my daughter arrived. I was able to finish in three years instead of five. ”

Lasting Relationships Through Education

Archer completed her Ph.D. in 2023 but still felt she could make an impact by gaining broader exposure for her research.

“We want to take good care of our military; they do so much and it’s the least we can do,” she said. “The need for awareness has a deep meaning for me as prior military. Burnout can affect everything.”

She reached out to Dr. Linenberger, who suggested the submission to JBAM. Together, they achieved publication of “Burnout and Decision-Making in U.S. Air Force Maintainers: A Phenomenological Study.”

“He is an excellent, supportive mentor,” Archer said. “He has a great eye for expanding on topics or questions I wouldn’t have thought of and he’s continued to provide mentorship even after my program.”

Archer said her experiences with both her professors and peers were impressive. “I’m still in touch with two of my fellow students. You build really good relationships and I didn’t expect that,” she said.

Continued Commitment to Learning

Archer lives in Maryland with her daughter and husband. She is the board secretary for a nonprofit and contributes as an editorial team reviewer for human resources and organizational behavior publications. Ultimately, she said her dream is to work in education one day as an adjunct or full-time professor.

In the meantime, she spreads the word about Bellevue University to aspiring learners as others did for her. “Bellevue University is so different and unique,” Archer said.

Clearing Hurdles with Flexible Degree Options

As an international student, Mahupete said his bachelor’s degree journey was challenging due to a lack of access to student loans or financial aid. “However, overcoming these obstacles made me more resilient, and the knowledge I gained helped me grow into leadership roles at QLI,” he said.

My experience in a mission-driven, nonprofit healthcare organization also allowed me to share insights on leadership, team development and operational challenges,” he said.

While balancing school, work and life was difficult, Mahupete said he appreciates the lessons it taught him. “I had to work while going to school, all while managing the financial strain of higher tuition without access to student loans or financial aid,” he said. “It required discipline, strong time management and a clear sense of priorities. I had to make sacrifices, stay extremely organized and rely on a strong support system of family and friends. Looking back, the challenge helped shape the leader I am today.”

While continuing to grow his leadership abilities, Mahupete even wrote a book on the subject to help others develop leaders within their organizations. Released in 2019, Dream Catcher is an established coaching program for leadership succession.

Jonathan K. Hernandez took advantage of the company’s educational benefits, earning a Master of Science in Acquisition and Contract Management last year from Bellevue University. Changing course when approached with challenges has led Kyle Payne,  Ph.D., down a unique path – from education to welding to coaching and research. 

After earning his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Master of Science in Adult Education, Payne was prepared to begin a career as an instructional designer.

“Unfortunately, the Great Recession limited opportunities in learning and development,” he said. “So, I pivoted, learning how to weld. That path led to opportunities overseeing quality management and then leading talent development initiatives in the structural steel industry.”

Today, after completing the Bellevue University Ph.D. in  Human Capital Management, Payne is a leadership consultant and professional coach. He also conducts research on ethical followership, presenting regularly at conferences related to leadership, followership and ethics. He recently did a TEDx Talk on the topic at Lewis University.

A Unique Learning Experience

Payne was attracted to Bellevue University because of its support for nontraditional students. “They also partnered with my former employer to provide cost-effective options for graduate study,” he said. “The focus on human capital management in the Ph.D. program is unique and helped me recognize the potential fit.”

In addition to group projects that provided invaluable learning opportunities, Payne said the experiences he had with Bellevue University faculty can’t be matched. “I succeeded in large part because I had faculty at Bellevue University who took a genuine interest in me and who challenged me to learn and grow,” he said.

Pursuing New Opportunities

Payne said completing his Ph.D. has opened up many opportunities, particularly as a leadership consultant and a professional coach. “Many clients know of Bellevue University, and those who don’t pick up quickly when I talk about my Ph.D. program and the value of the degree,” he said. “From a personal standpoint, I am very confident in the knowledge and skills that I gained through my program.”

His work in the program has also led to significant research opportunities, particularly on ethical leadership and leadership in engineering.

“When I entered the dissertation phase of my Ph.D. program, I had recently started working for an engineering firm. They were gracious enough to support my efforts to survey engineers for my dissertation,” Payne said. “While I do believe that the engineering profession is far behind where it should be as a force for good in society, I have been impressed with the commitment of engineering professionals to doing the right thing and taking seriously the ethical implications of their actions.”

Payne’s interest in the ethics of leadership stems from a passion for leadership styles that benefit all. “What we have missed, and what the followership community is generating theory around, is the powerful role that followers play in co-creating leadership, including ethical leadership,” he said. “After earning my Ph.D. at Bellevue University, I began studying ethical followership because I believe that conceptualizing leadership as a collective process is of greater benefit to society than a continued focus on individual leaders.”

Applying Experience to Practice

Payne said he draws inspiration from how much knowledge depends on experience. Just as he has built his knowledge and skills through experience, he encourages his clients to do the same.

“When I have interviewed professionals about times they have experienced or observed resistance to an unethical request, it is striking to me how much variation exists,” he said. He explains that some simply say “leave the company if you don’t like it” while those who have more tools in their toolbox explore solutions. “Because that practice is so valuable, I tend to focus ethical followership workshops on planning and role-playing realistic examples,” he said.
 

Today, as Director of Graduate Enrollment at Bellevue University, Stock draws on his own journey to guide others—especially military students—through one of life’s biggest transitions: discovering what comes next.

“I’ve had students come back and say thank you—just like I did when I was an Air Force recruiter,” he said. “That’s the best part of this job, helping someone take that next step and knowing you made a difference.”

Stock’s own second chapter began shortly after retiring from active duty. He joined Bellevue University in 2016, initially as Assistant Director of Enrollment Management before ascending to director in 2017. But his relationship with the University goes back even further. While stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, Stock earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2008. He later earned a master’s degree in Organizational Performance in 2021.

“Being a student here gave me empathy for what our learners go through,” he said. “Balancing school, work and family is hard. But I also know how powerful it is when you finish.”

Why military students find their fit at Bellevue University

Stock says those features are important, but what really sets the University apart is its people.

As someone who spent 10 years recruiting for the Air Force, Stock sees clear parallels between that role and his current work leading graduate admissions. In both, it’s about listening, building trust and helping people make informed, life-shaping decisions.

That philosophy shows up in the continuity of care students receive. Family ties and a legacy of service

Stock’s personal connection to Bellevue University extends to his family. His quadruplet children—Emma, Dillon, Riley and Owen—enrolled together after high school and often saw each other in classes while completing their general education requirements.

In 2024, three of the siblings graduated: Emma with a degree in Biology, Dillon in Computer Information Systems and Cybersecurity, and Riley in Sustainability Management. Owen will graduate soon with a degree in Behavioral Science.

“They saw what this University did for me, and they knew what it stood for,” Stock said. “To watch them grow here and earn their degrees has been one of the proudest experiences of my life.”

His family’s service tradition runs deep, as well. Stock’s oldest son, Colin, is currently serving in the Air Force—marking four generations of military service. Colin is stationed in Alaska and will soon transfer to Washington state.

Reflecting on his own journey—from a young airman to a university leader helping others pursue their goals—Stock sees a throughline of purpose and preparation. “You’ve already had a job with a mission,” he said. “A lot of vets want their next step to be just as meaningful. Education is how you start defining what that looks like.”

Dr. Darrell Aubrey served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, but he didn’t stop there. A lifelong learner, he earned his doctorate degree in Management and Organizational Leadership, became an adjunct instructor at Bellevue University and now teaches full time in the College of Business.

“The transition felt organic. I already had a long-standing relationship with the University, and teaching had always been a core part of my leadership responsibilities in the military,” Dr. Aubrey said. “Moving from mentoring future military leaders to educating future supply chain professionals just felt like a natural evolution of my purpose.”

Finding the Intersection of Logistics, Leadership and a Supportive Environment

Dr. Aubrey spent the majority of his military career – 28 years – as a logistician. “I held roles at every level — from tactical logistics on the ground to strategic-level planning for global operations,” he said. “My final assignment in uniform was as an Associate Professor in the U.S. Army War College, where I taught logistics and theater operations. It was there that I discovered how much I enjoy educating others.” In particular, he found that building systems, solving problems, and developing leaders really excited him. With his combination of expertise and education, the Texas resident now teaches online courses in supply chain management and logistics.

When he first explored teaching options, Dr. Aubrey said Bellevue University stood out for its flexibility. “This had been especially important while I was still on active duty — and the University also stood out for its incredible level of support. From day one, I never felt like I was just a number.”

Whenever Dr. Aubrey had a question or a suggestion, he said the leaders in his department always made time to respond. “Bellevue University doesn't just care about the students — it genuinely values the instructors, too,” he said.

He said the Bellevue University faculty, administration and staff are genuinely some of the most welcoming and helpful professionals he’s ever worked with. “There's a real sense of community and shared purpose here. I especially enjoy attending graduation — it's a chance to celebrate my students' achievements and reconnect with colleagues who've become good friends over the years,” he said.

Having worked hands-on in logistics over more than three decades of drastically changing technology, Dr. Aubrey says his military background shapes everything he does in the classroom. “I bring real-world experience, high expectations and a commitment to teamwork and accountability,” he said. “I incorporate case studies from my time in service and from current events in global logistics. Whether we're discussing supply chain disruptions or ethical procurement, I draw from a career of operational challenges and solutions to help students bridge theory with practice.”

He also emphasizes leadership as much as he can with his students. “Having led teams through combat deployments, disaster relief operations and large-scale logistical movements, I understand the complexity, urgency and human impact behind supply chain decisions,” he said. “I also bring the perspective of someone who's lived the consequences of poor planning—and the rewards of innovative thinking.”

Dr. Aubrey’s own personal philosophy impacts how he interacts with students. “I consider myself a lifelong learner and believe education should be practical, purposeful and personal,” he said.”I also believe in the power of human connection — whether it's in a discussion forum or a video call. My goal is to make every student feel seen, heard and supported.”

In his role as Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain and Logistics Management, Dr. Aubrey also helps shape curriculum to meet today's global challenges, ensuring students graduate not only with knowledge but with confidence to lead.

Dr. Aubrey said he’d recommend Bellevue University to anyone because they meet students where they are. “We don't just talk about flexibility — we deliver it. “After joining the hospital, my engagement grew, and I turned to love the mission and purpose of BBGH,” the 2018 MHA graduate of Bellevue University explains. “In the first few years, I got involved in several committees, shared my opinions on different things, and truly found my rhythm within the finance department.”

Mazanec was eventually promoted to controller and believed she was on track to become the next CFO. After five years in that role, the CEO approached her about applying for the open Chief Operating Officer position — an opportunity she had never considered.

“He mentioned he saw me eventually sitting in his chair as CEO someday,” Mazanec shares. “That one moment is what led me to visioning myself as a hospital CEO.”

Zach Hogge has seen a lot  – both in his career as a U.S. Marine, and now as a firefighter and paramedic. Along the way, the Norfolk, Virginia, native developed a passion for how individuals behave and think in the workplace. He’s taken that one step further by pursuing his Master of Science in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Bellevue University. And now he’s putting what he’s learned to the test by conducting research at his fire department and giving department leaders insight into addressing testing inequities.

Developing a Curiosity for Psychology

Hogge earned his associate’s degree in emergency services and learned about Bellevue University from colleagues while teaching a community college paramedic program.

“Going back to school was something I always wanted to do. I knew it was going to be online because of my work schedule,” he said.

Hogge shopped around and liked that Bellevue University has a brick-and-mortar campus, affordable tuition and scholarships.

“Bellevue University also kept coming up with the best transfer credit opportunities,” he said. “They worked with me, took my credits and most of my textbooks were electronic. Every semester I could find out what scholarship I was eligible for and that really reduced the financial burden. I got a great value out of the money I was paying.”

He was also drawn to the University’s undergraduate leadership program. “Coming from the Marine Corps, I’ve always been interested in leadership studies,” he said. “I’m fascinated by the culture of the Marine Corps.”

Throughout his bachelor’s program, Hogge felt the one class at a time structure set him up for success. ‘It made it easier to balance home, work and school,” he said. “I had to work hard, but my instructors were always there to help and it made me more disciplined. Now, when I run into an obstacle, I’m more likely to face it head on and not be overwhelmed by it because I have a systemic approach in place.”

Hogge completed his Bachelor of Science in Leadership in  2022. Throughout the program, he noticed that much of the research and theories came out of industrial organizational psychology so he decided to learn even more by pursuing his master’s degree in the subject. “I wanted to continue to study leadership and hone my understanding of it – organizational psychology was how to do it,” he said.

Taking Notice and Then Action

One of the most unique parts of Hogge’s experience in the graduate program has been the opportunity to approach his thesis differently. Many of his classmates focused on building surveys, conducting statistical analysis and providing recommendations. Instead, he saw an opportunity to tackle a challenge that was directly impacting his workplace.

“I wanted to do something more applicable to a contemporary issue,” he said. “We were seeing about half of recruits fall out of the fire academy. That adds up to losing about $600,000, which is about the cost of a single fire truck.”

He decided to look into why they are losing so many employees. He found that many are not prepared physically. Digging deeper, he found that there were fewer female candidates.

“We conducted a focused research study to find out why the females are being knocked out of the candidate pool,” he said. They looked at adjusting the test to assess upper body strength in a different way to better predict recruitment outcomes.

Although the modified test didn’t improve pass rates, it gave the department a starting point for continuing to pursue improvement and more equitable testing. “We learned that we just don’t know enough yet,” Hogge said.

Associate Professor and Program Director JoDee Goracke said that even though Hogge’s research didn’t lead to immediate results, his efforts are crucial to future progress.

“Beyond their on-the-ground duties, they have undertaken a significant research project,” she said. “Zach’s work has the potential to not only support gender equity but also enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of our firefighting teams. The research and passion Zach has brought to his practicum and capstone projects demonstrate the very real impact our students are making in so many different domains and professions.”

During the showcase, Rachael and Sarah presented information to attendees, who circulated to different tables, on the work to streamline the online students’ experience in accessing support. Their showcase presentation focused on “Operationalizing Cognitive Kindness.” It highlighted how the University team mapped the user experience to engage with each type of support online and then simplified the student experience with:

• Single sign-on to access academic supports
• Embedded descriptions and links to academic support inside courses
• Cross-functional team collaboration to increase University-wide information sharing and awareness of academic supports

Since the first changes were made two years ago, academic support usage across all types has steadily increased from just under 1,000 users per week in November 2022 to nearly 6,000 users per week in November 2024.

Bellevue University recognizes Anna Fisher, an adjunct professor in the Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program, for her contribution to the newly released Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice, Seventh Edition. Fisher authored a chapter titled Measuring Performance and Improving Quality, drawing from her experience in healthcare and quality management.

Fisher has been part of Bellevue University for more than 18 years, teaching Quality Management in the MHA program under the direction of Dr. Mike Freel. Her career includes over 24 years in healthcare and 23 years at Union Pacific Railroad, adding practical knowledge to her teaching.

The textbook, published by Springer Publishing, is a resource designed to improve care for older adults. It includes updates on trends in geriatric care, care for chronic conditions, nutrition, dementia and mental illness.

“As a nurse and educator, I focus on quality assurance and performance improvement,” Fisher said. “Collaborating with experts like Dr. Marie Boltz at Penn State to contribute to this book allowed me to share knowledge that can improve care for older adults. I hope this textbook encourages practitioners to apply evidence-based protocols to improve outcomes in different care settings.”

In addition to teaching, Fisher produces the Now What? educational television series on elder care, dementia, and mental health. The series, airing on WOWT-NBC, has received recognition from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association. The next episode, focusing on Parkinson’s Disease, will air on Dec. 27.

Bellevue University is one of America's top online colleges and universities, according to Newsweek. 

Bellevue University is one of 125 higher education institutions to receive a five-star rating - the recognition list's highest honor. 

The Newsweek ranking is split into two groups:

• America's Top Online Colleges - the top 250 colleges and universities that offer online undergraduate or graduate degree programs, including hybrid programs with online and offline courses and exams.
• America's Top Online Learning Providers - the top 100 institutions other than a university or college, and platforms, which provide access to their own or third-party online courses.

Bellevue University ranked #36 overall among public and private universities in Newsweek's ranking of online colleges and universities. The magazine worked with marketing and consumer data firm Statista to rank the institutions and released the list in November 2024.

"This ranking highlights Bellevue University's commitment to and ongoing investment into providing learners with the access and flexibility they need to pursue a high-quality education and successfully earn their degree or enhance their career," said President Dr. Mary Hawkins. 

The rankings are based on an online survey of U.S. residents who have used online learning services to obtain an academic degree or acquire knowledge and skills for their jobs (professional development) or hobbies (personal development).

User reviews and additional institutional indicators were transformed into score values and aggregated toward a final score. The ranking's evaluation criteria include:

• Institutional indicators (enrollment, graduation statistics, research activity): 20%
• Rating of experience: 50%
• Overall satisfaction: 20%
• Recommendation: 10%

Bellevue University’s People & Business Leadership (PBLR) Certificate of Completion program has earned a Silver Award from Chief Learning Officer (CLO) magazine, recognizing its contribution to leadership development and workplace readiness.

The PBLR program is a management-focused certificate designed to provide students with leadership skills applicable across industries. By combining application-based learning with theoretical knowledge, the program enables students to apply what they learn to workplace challenges.

Updates to the program have increased student retention and completion rates, showing its success in engaging learners and supporting their goals. These results reflect the program’s focus on delivering education that prepares students for leadership roles.

Amazon Web Services’ AWS Cloud Institute and Bellevue University, one of the nation’s leading online universities, are teaming up to connect even more learners, regardless of their technical background, to cloud computing careers.

As one of the first higher education institutions teaming up with AWS Cloud Institute, Bellevue will leverage AWS Cloud Institute across its diverse learner and corporate partner network.

The award-winning paper, titled A Guide for Assessing Student Retention and Recommended Strategies for Change, was authored by Bellevue University College of Business faculty members Sharon Rea and Mike Freel. Drawing on their work with Bellevue University’s 2022-2023 Retention Committee, Rea and Freel presented the paper at the 20th Annual National Symposium on Student Retention, held Nov. 4-7 in Destin, Florida.

Their research analyzed retention strategies across Bellevue University programs, with the Retention Committee’s work involving faculty, administration, and student services. The paper highlights best practices to support adjunct faculty, enhance student engagement, improve communication, and refine curriculum design.

“These findings provide a framework for Bellevue University and serve as a model for institutions aiming to improve student retention and success,” said Sharon Rea, Assistant Dean of the College of Business. “We are honored to share our insights with the higher education community.”

Mike Freel, Professor in the College of Business, added, “By focusing on practical, evidence-based approaches, we’ve developed recommendations that can be applied not only at Bellevue University but also at institutions nationwide. We’re proud to contribute to the broader conversation on enhancing student persistence and achievement.”

Since its inception 20 years ago, the institute has helped more than 500 healthcare professionals advance their careers and elevate their leadership skills.

From five participants in its first year to a current average of 40 each year, the NHA Leadership Institute has grown and evolved, but its original mission remains the same — to advance the effectiveness of hospitals by providing a quality environment for professional development and support for healthcare leaders.

Participants come together over the course of 10 months for intense, day-long sessions designed to help them learn new skills, find inspiration in their roles, and invigorate their performance in the hospitals where they work. Some of the specific topics included in the institute’s agenda are emotional intelligence, working with conflict, workplace diversity and analyzing performance issues.

Participants also take advantage of one-on-one executive coaching from a certified executive coach and other content delivered by expert faculty from Bellevue University. One such instructor is Dr. Mike Freel, program director for the Master of Healthcare Administration program at the University, who’s worked with the institute for the past 14 years.

“Of course, participants are learning what it takes to be an effective leader in their hospitals, but a lot of the value that the Leadership Institute brings is the opportunity to learn from each other,” he said. “The program isn’t designed to be a lecture — it’s an interactive, discussion-based program that is facilitated by experienced faculty, but the real learning takes place in the conversations, stories and shared experience of the entire class of healthcare leaders.”

Freel believes what makes the Leadership Institute so effective is the fact that hospital leaders in Nebraska aren’t satisfied with doing the same thing day after day.

“They look for opportunities for professional leadership development,” he said. “They look for individuals who have the knowledge and skill set to lead their hospitals into the future. A leader’s ability to understand how their behaviors and influence affect the outcomes of the hospital and the people within their walls, patients and staff, is critical to their success.”

Professionals involved with the Leadership Institute are identified by their hospitals as up-and-coming leaders. Freel shared that he asks participants in the orientation session, “Why are you here?” and is met with a lot of different responses, including “My boss told me I had to come,” or, “I want to learn more about how to be an effective leader.”

“But what they may not realize is that they’re here because their hospital values them,” Freel said. “The hospital sees them as someone they want to develop and prepare for bigger, more impactful leadership roles. No one gets enrolled in the Leadership Institute because they aren’t doing a good job. This program is designed to prepare future hospital leaders with the bedrock knowledge and skills they need to be excellent leaders.”

Brian Noonan, Senior Director of Communications and Education at the NHA, seconds that thought. He said he tells institute participants, “The reason why you’re here is your hospital thinks highly enough of you to invest both a dollars and time commitment to have you in this class, so take advantage of it.”

Noonan explained that demand for the Leadership Institute continues to grow. In fact, the institute is now seen as the premier leadership development program for hospitals in Nebraska.

“There’s no other program that offers extensive training over several months at multiple locations with the inclusion of a customized 360° leadership assessment and multiple coaching sessions offered by graduate-level faculty,” Freel added. “There’s competition among the hospitals in Nebraska wanting to host a Leadership Institute session. There’s community pride in the opportunity to showcase new hospital service lines or new facilities to other healthcare leadership professionals.”

Troy Bruntz, president and CEO of Community Hospital in McCook, shared that his hospital has been involved with the institute from the get-go and sends about five employees each year. He himself is a graduate of the program.

“The institute is the first experience with leadership training for most of them,” he said. “They have clinical degrees but that rarely includes good leadership training of any kind. It won’t change someone into a great leader by itself, but it provides them the tools necessary to grow every day.”

Bruntz feels the Leadership Institute has opened employees’ eyes to the value of networking as well. As such, they tend to become involved with associations and other meetings across the state and country.

By nature, the institute is unique in that participants from a range of roles come together from across the state — from Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff to Pender Community Hospital in Pender.  

“It’s a bit of a melting pot,” Noonan said.

He, too, has seen the strong relationships participants build with each other and maintain even after their time in the program is done.

For Freel, it’s been a privilege to see so many people with a passion for taking care of others come through the program.

“They’ve been through so much, especially in the last few years,” he said. “COVID fundamentally changed how healthcare is delivered. Leadership has changed, too, and participants in the Leadership Institute learn to adapt and apply their leadership skills in a dynamic, changing environment. We get the opportunity to see the growth in their leadership skills and how they continue to have a positive impact on their hospitals.”

Indeed, that’s what the NHA Leadership Institute is all about.

Dr. Dishant Pandya, Associate Professor in Bellevue University’s College of Business, recently co-authored a study published in the Journal of Finance and Accounting. 

The study, titled “The Effect of Board Composition on Long-Term Firm Performance: NASDAQ versus NYSE,” examines the impact of the 2003 board-independence mandate on the long-term financial performance of publicly traded U.S. companies that are traded on the country’s two largest stock exchanges.

Dr. Pandya explained that the mandate, which requires companies to have independent boards, has contributed to improved firm performance over time. This study found that the mandate significantly improved the long-term financial performance of companies listed on the NYSE, but had no impact on companies traded on NASDAQ.

In addition to its publication, the research was presented at the IGBR Summer Online Conference, where it received a Distinguished Research Award.

Dr. Julia Cronin-Gilmore has been named one of the top five finalists for the 2024 CUES Distinguished Director Award, presented by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES). This prestigious award honors board members who have made significant contributions to the advancement and success of their credit unions. Notably, Dr. Cronin-Gilmore is the only female to make the top five in this category.

The winner for the Distinguished Director Award receives complimentary registration to the CUES Directors Conference, a trophy, an interview with CUES CEO Heather McKissick, and recognition at an award celebration. They will also be featured on CUES’ social media platforms and receive $500 to donate to a charity of their choice.

Dr. Cronin-Gilmore has been a board member for Cobalt Credit Union for 15 years and became Chair in January 2020. She is a Professor and Director of the Doctor of Business Administration program at Bellevue University, where she has been teaching since 2000 and leading marketing initiatives. 

Dr. Cronin-Gilmore has received numerous awards and recognitions for her research studies and for excellence in teaching. She published a book titled Small Business Marketing Strategy in 2010 and serves on several editorial boards, including the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council. She is also the Editor of the Journal for Excellence in Business and Education (JEBE). 

Dr. Cronin-Gilmore holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration, a Master of Arts in Management, and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing.

For 18 years, Culbreath was a stay-at-home mom. When her two daughters left for college, she decided to enter the workforce again. She started as a sales floor associate at Walmart and was promoted a year later to department manager.

Over the next decade, Culbreath received a handful more promotions, including to Academy Coach. During this time, she registered for Walmart’s Live Better U education benefit, through which the company pays for eligible associates’ college tuition.

“I was teaching young adults every day who were struggling to pay for college and living expenses with their wages,” Culbreath explains. “I kept telling them about our wonderful college program, but they thought there was a trick to it. I signed up to show them that if a 56-year-old woman could do it, they could, too.”

She adds, “I had been out of school for 38 years, so if I could do it, surely young adults who had been out of school for less than five years could do it.”

A couple of the degree programs in Live Better U are offered through Bellevue University, including its bachelor’s degree in business management and leadership that Culbreath chose to pursue.

“Even as an older adult, I’ve had to learn to manage my time to complete my class assignments,” she says. “Working around 60 hours weeks and taking classes has been challenging but also very rewarding.”

Her experience in Bellevue University’s business management and leadership program has already made a direct impact on Culbreath’s career.

She’s especially enjoyed her human resources classes, because they’ve helped her grow her leadership skills in a way where she can “be all that I can for my associates.”

These skills have also led to Culbreath being promoted to continuous skills development manager in a Walmart Fulfillment center. Recently, she accepted yet another promotion to Academy Lead. One of the desired qualifications for the role was the exact degree Culbreath will be graduating with at the end of September. This job will set Culbreath up to become a store manager or a human resource manager in the future.

“I appreciate that I work for a company that wants to invest in their employees by providing in-store training classes and a totally free education with no strings attached,” Culbreath says. “But my most favorite thing is that Walmart cares for its associates. We are a family.”

Because of how rewarding she’s found her Live Better U experience — and Bellevue education — to be, Culbreath has made it her mission to tell every single Walmart associate who will listen about it.

“I am privileged to be one of the first people that all new hires at my current facility meet,” she says. “During our onboarding, I tell everyone my story about the Live Better U program, Bellevue University and, of course, my advisor Diego. I am proud to say that one of my team leads has recently been accepted into the same program at BU starting next term.”

Culbreath’s professor, Dr. Kelly Sylte, shares that from the beginning, Culbreath took charge of her own learning.

“She put in extra effort throughout her academic journey—asking questions, engaging with classmates, seeking clarification, et cetera,” she says. “It has been my experience that Vanessa has been focused on achieving her goals while enjoying the process. I’m so happy for her.”

Development of both programs is a direct response to the evolving needs of employees, employers, and the increasing demand for skilled leaders capable of navigating complex organizational challenges and change. The programs aim to develop students' skills in leadership, organization, and strategic planning, preparing them for success in a variety of organizational settings. 

Dr. Matt Davis, Dean of CETM, added, "Our goal is to develop leaders who are not only skilled but also adaptable and innovative. The curriculum is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience that is directly applicable to today's dynamic workplace.”

All Roads Lead to Bellevue University

De Long wanted to attend Bellevue University based on her mother’s experience at the school. “I wanted to be like my mom and graduate with my master's as a Bruin,” she said. “I remember how much she genuinely enjoyed the program and always expressed positive things about her experience.”

As De Long began researching further, she learned that Bellevue University offered the perfect program for her. “I also felt this program suited my needs the most out of all the programs I stumbled upon, as I wanted to dive deep into social media and online marketing,” she said.

Digging Deeper Into Marketing

Though De Long lives in the Omaha area, she chose to study online for more flexibility in her busy life. “Balance between life and work came down to me thoroughly planning my days out. I did a little bit of work each day so I did not overwhelm myself.” she said.

Overall, the program challenged De Long to approach marketing in a new, more comprehensive way. “While most programs teach the how's and the what's, this program taught about the why’s. It taught me about my power and impact as a marketer and how each decision I make as a marketer traces back to the question of ethics,” she said.

As a social media manager at a local advertising agency, De Long was able to directly apply her creative background to the program. “My knowledge of graphic design and creative tools enhanced my ability to think outside of the box and get more experimental with my projects,” she said.

In turn, De Long’s applied her learnings to her professional role. “My degree equipped me with the knowledge of ethics and social media that I needed to be able to manage the client accounts that I have on the daily at work, as well as the knowledge I needed to promote myself as an independent live music photographer.”

Blending Marketing and Music for Success

With her creative talents, it’s no surprise that music has always been a love for De Long. As she became more interested in photography as an adult, the two became an obvious fit. “When live music came back after a hiatus during the 2020 pandemic, I knew it was something I needed to pursue professionally,” she said. “I look at the world as a giant canvas, so I am always looking for something to capture. Live music takes it to a whole new level. Following the action gives me a rush of energy that can’t be felt anywhere else.”

During one of the classes in her program, Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis, De Long was able to combine this passion with marketing in her award-winning project on music distribution trends and how they impact the modern music industry and consumer behavior.

“I enjoyed doing the research and the public participation that I had to generate to complete the project,” she said. “I built a survey that over 200 participants filled out and enjoyed the interview I conducted with the music industry professionals I chose.”

Bellevue University, one of the nation’s top online universities, is the recipient of a 2024 Anthology Catalyst Award for the redesign of its top-enrolling People and Business Leadership certificate program.

The Catalyst Awards honor excellence in higher education online programs and were announced last week by Anthology, an educational technology company. This year, 35 winners in eight categories were chosen from 108 nominees across 19 countries. 

Bellevue University was recognized in the category of student success. The award recognizes institutions whose innovative use of Anthology solutions has led to increased retention, increased completion, and/or improved outcomes through the implementation of new academic and/or administrative resources, data analytics solutions, scalable advising and intervention strategies, student support programs, and more. Winners are selected by a cross-functional panel of Anthology judges.

“Through our innovative online learning programs we’re not only able to advance our mission, we’re also helping to address the nation’s workforce needs by helping learners gain the skills they need to make a positive impact in the world,” said Dr. Mary Hawkins, President of Bellevue University. 

According to Dr. Matt Davis, Executive Vice President and Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology and Management, the innovations implemented through the certificate program redesign have strengthened the University’s commitment to applied learning and surpassed completion and equity goals. 

“Program completion rates have increased by double digits to more than 90% across all student populations and we’ve also seen enhanced student and faculty satisfaction with the learning and teaching experience,” he said. Dr. Davis added that the lessons learned during the transformation initiative are now being applied to other Bellevue University certificate and degree programs with similar results.

• Paul Banks, College of Arts and Sciences, was honored with the Lou Soukup Adjunct Faculty Award at the undergraduate level. Banks teaches in the Bellevue University Kirkpatrick Signature Series. 
• Inna Goldman, College of Business, was honored with the Lou Soukup Adjunct Faculty Award at the graduate level.  Goldman teaches in the MBA program, as well as Accounting and Business areas.
• Sue McDaniel, Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award. As part of the University's faculty since 2007, McDaniel has taught 92 different courses, and more than 540 classes to more than 11,500 students.
• Dr. Stephen Linenberger, Professor in the College of Business, was honored with the Excellence in Service Award. In addition to his teaching role, Dr. Linenberger leads the Faculty Senate and provides leadership and support to the Yeshiva Initiatives Educational Program (YIEP). 
• Monica McElhaney, Professor in the College of Business, was honored with the Excellence in Service Award. She teaches and direct numerous Accounting-related courses and also serves the community – she has organized campus blood drives since 2014. 
• Brian Kear, User Experience Designer and Adjunct Faculty, was honored with the President's Service Award. Kear has represented the University in several initiatives, ranging from developing technology to support the state academic decathlon to design and development of a website and online storytelling capabilities for the new Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Kear has also played a key role in the University's education partnership with Opportunity education, including working with Dr. Jodee Goracke to implement a design thinking course that benefits students in Nebraska and at the Opportunity Education campus in Tanzania.

The all-campus meeting was held in-person and via Zoom and brought together more than 500 employees from campus and multiple remote locations for an update on university operations.

This year, college students competed in more than 100 event categories. More than $120,000 in scholarships were awarded to the top-ranked students in the events.

Bellevue University student Maria Pinedo placed fifth in the Foundations of Management category. Pinedo is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Finance.

Bellevue University students Andres Valencia and Carlos Ortega placed fourth in the Management Case Study category. Valencia is pursuing a Bachelor of Sports Management with an Emphasis in Athletic Coaching, while Ortega is earning his Master of Science in Business Analytics. 

Dr. Laurel Mitchell, Program Director in Acquisition and Contract Management and Professor, served as the Bellevue University team advisor. 

“Our three student-athletes represented Bellevue University as exceptional leaders,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Their dedication and commitment to excellence highlights the importance of the real-world business skills that students learn as part of their academic programs.”

The FBLA-Collegiate organization is committed to bridging the gap between future and present professionals through service, progress and education. 

Bellevue University, one of the nation’s top online universities, received a Recognition of Achievement Award at the 2024 Eduventures Summit last week in Chicago.

The award recognizes Bellevue University’s success in transforming teaching, learning and student support in its People and Business Leadership Certificate program, which is the University’s top-enrolling certificate program. Bellevue University was one of eight institutions to receive either Recognition of Achievement Awards or Innovation Awards.

“One year after the certificate program transformation project, we improved completion rates by double digits to more than 90% across all student populations and enhanced student and faculty satisfaction with the learning and teaching experience,” said Dr. Matt Davis, Executive Vice President and Dean of the College of Engineering, Technology and Management.

Dr. Davis added that the lessons learned during the transformation initiative are being applied to other Bellevue University certificate and degree programs with similar results. 

Now in its eighth year, the Eduventures Awards Program honors organizations and teams that are shaping the future of higher education. Entries are designed to identify higher education institutions that have demonstrated significant innovation when developing and implementing programs that impact enrollment, student experience and outcomes.

Among the graduates is Maddy Vasquez, student speaker, who has earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology degree. Vasquez, an Omaha Central graduate, worked as a lab technician in the university science lab and played soccer for the Bruins before an injury sidelined her in 2019.

“It’s inspiring to see our students realize they can do more and achieve their educational dreams,” said Bellevue University President Dr. Mary Hawkins. “Maddy’s story shows that the pathway to a college degree isn’t easy, but it’s always worthwhile.”

The commencement ceremony, which begins at 9:10 a.m. with the procession of graduates and the program starting at 9:30 a.m., will also feature comments from Michael Horn, a widely recognized thought leader.

10 students will also receive their doctoral degrees in a separate hooding ceremony held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 31, at the John B. Muller Administrative Services Building - Symposium Room located on the campus of Bellevue University. Dr. Cherisse Navarro, who has earned her Doctorate in Business Administration, will be the student speaker at the doctoral hooding ceremony.

According to University Registrar Colette Lewis, the University conferred 784 degrees from Jan. 1 through March 1, 2024. This includes 517 undergraduate degrees, 255 graduate degrees and 12 doctoral degrees. Bellevue University now has more than 60,000 graduates worldwide.

Team members placed in the following categories:

• Maria Pinedo, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Finance, placed fifth in the Foundations of Management category and 2nd in the Organizational Behavior and Leadership category.
• Andres Valencia, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Sports Management with an Emphasis in Athletic Coaching, placed fourth in the Organizational Behavior and Leadership category. 
• Carlos Ortega, who is pursuing a Master of Science in Business Analytics, teamed up with Valencia to take second place in the Management Case Study and Finance Case study categories.

Dr. Laurel Mitchell, Program Director in Acquisition and Contract Management and Professor, served as the Bellevue University team advisor. 

“Participation in the FBLA-Collegiate competition is a valuable experience for Bellevue University students,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Recognition in the competition shines a light on the real-world business skills that students learn in class and lets students sharpen their leadership, communication and teamwork skills as they compete against their peers.”

The team also received an overall Award of Excellence for reactivating the University's FBLA-Collegiate chapter. 

The FBLA-Collegiate organization is committed to bridging the gap between future and present professionals through service, progress and education. 

The National FBLA-Collegiate competition will be held June 24-27, 2024 in Orlando, Florida. 

I was a senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force when I met Stuart Allison, a Bellevue University student, while deployed in Africa.

A few years later, we connected again in Ramstein Air Base, Germany. I told Allison that I would be moving to Offutt Air Force Base just south of Omaha, Nebraska. 

He then fervently recommended I attend Bellevue University. He had me enrolled by the time I in-processed at the base.

I started classes in January 2022 at Offutt Air Base and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in June 2023.

I chose that field since it’s aligned with my current career path in the military. I’ve been doing financial management for 20 years in the Air Force.

One of the things that stood out about Bellevue University was the way it cares for the military. In fact, the university offers numerous resources for service members, including the Military Veteran Services Center and military credit transfer. 

One of my instructors, Scott Kizzire, continuously motivated me to push through, even though my military responsibilities were increasing. The non-threatening climate that promotes education is what I enjoyed the most.

I also appreciated the people I met at Bellevue University so much so that I invited some of them, including my student advisor, to my promotion release ceremony in December 2023.

Only 1 percent achieve this rank of chief master sergeant, and that’s congressionally mandated. My actual promotion ceremony is on March 29, 2024. To honor Bellevue University, I’ve chosen to have my ceremony in the Symposium Room.

As a result of this promotion, I was selected to be the senior enlisted leader of the 320^th Training Squadron.

I am originally from Port-au-Prince, Haiti and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 2003 because of all the opportunities it offered.

What a ride it has been. I also got my citizenship while in the Air Force, which was also a goal of mine.

Some of my career highlights include deploying multiple times as an interpreter (mostly in France and Africa), co-writing the Defense Language Proficiency Test for the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency, and serving as a master military training instructor, as well as a command chief executive assistant.

The very best one is that I successfully advocated for a subordinate to be allowed to travel home to see his child being born while he was attending basic training.

In the future, I hope to pursue an advanced degree at Bellevue University, but I am holding off for the time being because my wife, Yeleen - who’s also in the military, pursues her own bachelor’s degree in business. Because we have a child, we’re taking turns with our education pursuits.

I’m forever grateful for Bellevue University and its staff. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the care and educational nurturing I have experienced here.

Selecting a career is often a random, uniformed process for students at the undergraduate level.  John designed this Business degree program to help students discover the career that is the best-fit for their individual interests, skills and life goals.  “I believe teaching is about helping students live a better life,” John said.  “Our professors show students what they need to know and then provide the best tools to learn.”

“In this business degree program, students learn about themselves and potential career paths,” John described.  They take interest and skill assessments, explore various jobs and learn about potential employers.  Students match their own desires with the kind of jobs, and even workplace cultures, they might find enjoyable and rewarding.”

Another important step for students entering the job market is to establish their digital presence.  “Hiring managers often check Linked In profiles, and even social media, to learn about a job candidate,” John indicated.  Our students work on building the right kind of professional profiles which helps them expand their career network.”

The Bachelor of Science in Business teaches practical skills in core business topics and includes several applied learning experiences.  The core topics establish a strong foundation for the world of business: Communications, Human Resources, Marketing, Economics, Finance and Accounting, and Management. 

“These provide an important base of knowledge that will help students excel in virtually any business setting,” John said.  “In addition, they are able to customize their education through applied projects that go along with each core topic.”

Examples of applied projects include:

•   A student might be interested in starting their own business so they could develop a blueprint for the business.  One project might be a business plan and another might be a marketing plan.

•   A student may work for an employer that has changed customer service communications.  They could create an instructional presentation for customer-facing employees to help them learn the new process.   

•   A student might imagine being a product manager who is the direct point of contact for major clients.  They could create a “Best Practices” document for clients to use when they purchase the product.

Learning by doing is also embedded in the Capstone course toward the end of the program.  “The Capstone utilizes a business simulation where students work in groups of three to five people,” John described.  “Together, they run a business and compete against the other groups or teams.  This gives them experience in collaboration and teaches them to think about the reality of competitors in a business marketplace.”

John also works closely with the school’s senior leadership on innovations in education.  “I am constantly thinking about how students learn best,” John said.  “Historically, students have been asked to read chapters in a book and then write a paper.  That is still useful, but today, there are so many devices and a variety of ways to learn:  text, video, podcasts, interactive exercises and more.  Our goal is to match learning options with how today’s students take in information.”

“Continuous improvement requires change,” John added.  People will either run toward it or away from it.  I will always run toward it.”

EJ Kim, an MBA student in the Bellevue University College of Business, has been recognized with the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) scholarship through the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). The scholarship was first announced in November 2023. 

Kim, who lives in Omaha, received a comprehensive package of benefits enabling them to study for and take the CMA exam at no cost. The CMA certification is considered the benchmark for management accountants, and certifies mastery of 12 core practice areas in the profession.

“The CMA scholarship is a sign of excellence recognized around the world," explained Professor Cynthia Nye, Professor in the Bellevue University College of Business. “We're so proud of Eojin and their academic accomplishments."

Kim also receives IMA membership for up to three years while pursuing completion of the CMA exam; entrance fees to the CMA program; exam support package, including an assessment tool that can help assess the content covered on the CMA exam; registration fees for the first attempt at both parts of the CMA exam; and comprehensive online materials for both exam parts.

Chicago Cubs fans have the reputation of being exceptionally loyal. While dedicated to the Cubs, Associate Professor Merrill Johnson, MBA, is even more passionate about helping Bellevue University business students reach their goals. “Playing baseball and earning a degree are quite similar,” Merrill shared. “Like a baseball coach, I am here to teach and guide, but students need to do the work. I’ve learned it’s important to let students experiment but not go too far in the wrong direction.” 

Students will meet Merrill in the Marketing undergraduate program, the Business Administration undergraduate program, and the MBA degree program. Merrill began teaching full-time at Bellevue University in 1985. After two years, he became a part-time adjunct instructor in order to pursue a career in product management and sales. In 2012, he made teaching his full-time endeavor. “I enjoyed my work in industry but was drawn to Bellevue University and its students,” Merrill said. 

One of Merrill’s standout skills is bringing big thinkers together to get things done. He knows firsthand that employers value that capability. Merrill teaches students how to collaborate with people who are located across time zones and have varied backgrounds or interests.

“Whenever possible, we incorporate problem solving, case studies, group projects, and collaboration activities into our marketing courses,” Merrill described. “By the time students graduate they have learned what it takes to make independent decisions, and they understand the value of working with people to accomplish goals.”

Merrill finds that while Bellevue University business programs teach workplace-ready skills, some students question the need to learn certain things. “At the time, certain topics may not seem relevant but I tell students they will see the benefits later on,” he said.

Merrill emphasized that he appreciates Bellevue University’s pragmatic approach to learning. He is active in the intentional process of updating courses to incorporate the latest skills and abilities employers seek. “Our degree programs have an Advisory Committee of accomplished professionals who provide recommendations on the expertise students will need,” Merrill said. “In addition, professors conduct job market research. Then, we prioritize the knowledge and skills that are most important for student success.”  

In the undergraduate Marketing program, skills such as conducting case study analyses and understanding data analytics are examples of what the Advisory Committee recommended to help students be competitive in the job market. The Committee also suggested adding an understanding of social media platforms and content creation, as well as effective customer communication. “Now, jobs such as customer service, marketing research, social media, and sales are options for our graduates,” Merrill said.

Merrill’s talents not only benefit students but Bellevue University initiatives as well. For example, he is Chair of The Tom and Annie Pratt Entrepreneurial Award Program Committee, “The Pratt Award is a financial award presented to business owners who seek to grow, add employees, or expand operations,” Merrill said. “The Pratt Award Committee is comprised people from our Business College along with educators from other colleges across the University. Entrepreneurs benefit from a variety of expertise.”

“Along with financial support, Pratt Award recipients are paired with a mentor who is a sounding board for entrepreneurs as they plan and run their businesses. Current Bellevue University students, or those who have graduated within the past three years, are welcome to apply.”

Merrill, who is not only a Chicago Cubs follower but a big fan of the Bellevue University Bruins baseball team, believes that good people with big dreams are naturally anxious and impatient to get ahead. “To hit home runs, baseball players — and students — need to be diligent in their practice of what they have learned, and continue to learn to realize their potential," he emphasized. "Those are the kind of people who will be successful in their careers and life."

Her career at the transportation and logistics company started when she took a job as an operations management trainee in the area of transportation. In this role, Simandl worked with new drivers who had just received their CDL-A.

“It was a great learning opportunity for me, as I was new to the industry and they had many questions to keep me learning throughout my time in the position,” she said.

Because Simandl had previous supervisor experience from working as a reservation sales supervisor at Omni Hotels and Resorts Reservations Center in Omaha — where she managed 40 sales associates and oversaw the company’s Work From Home program long before the boom of remote work — she was quickly promoted to Werner’s operations manager of its One Way division. In this role, Simandl managed a team of about 10 transportation managers and helped guide them through the remote work process once the pandemic hit.

“My early experience in managing a remote team really came in handy in those years,” she said. “During this time, I also completed my Master of Science in Leadership with an executive coaching focus from Bellevue University in March 2021.”

The following July, Simandl joined Werner’s dedicated division as an operations supervisor.

“In this role, I have more ability to strategize and communicate with the customer directly to ensure they are receiving the best performance and collaboration from Werner Enterprises for their transportation needs,” she explained.

Simandl also serves as co-chair of the company’s Young Emerging Leaders associate resource group, through which she creates programming, networking and volunteer opportunities for up-and-coming leaders within the organization. In addition, she’s a steering committee member for the Women’s Leadership Alliance doing similar functions, but specific to supporting the women of Werner.

Over her time at the company, Simandl has earned such recognitions as the 2022 Safety Award, the 2021 Acceleration Award Winner, and the Heavy Duty Trucking Emerging Leader of 2023. The list goes on.

One thing Simandl is especially proud of is her service as a WEPride steering committee member. This group is Werner’s LGBTQIA+ associate resource group.

“I had the honor of serving on the steering committee and ensuring that Werner was a safe place for them,” Simandl said. “I launched our Safe Faces program highlighting those within our company who are safe for our LGBTQIA+ associates to go to should they ever need support and the stories behind why it matters to them. This has also branched off to another associate resource group focusing on Safe Faces for domestic violence survivors.”

Simandl recently received the 2023 Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s Women in Supply Chain Award as well.

“There are so many amazing women in this industry who are changing the face of it for the better, and many with years, decades even, more experience than I,” she said. “To be included in that group has been such an honor that I don’t have words. It feels great to be recognized for all that I’ve put my mind to. I truly care about the industry and diversity. Being honored for the work I’ve been a part of within DEI is something I will cherish for years to come. There is so much more work ahead, but seeing all of the women who were included in this honor, I know that we have a beautiful road ahead.”

Throughout her journey thus far, Simandl has felt the impact of her Master of Science in Leadership daily. It’s a degree she chose to pursue because she enjoys building up and encouraging others, and she takes pride in knowing she’s helped her colleagues grow within their own personal strengths and careers.

“The degree I completed has been helpful to me every day,” Simandl said. “I have been able to apply my knowledge with my team and ensure they are receiving resources and coaching that leads them to succeed in their roles. I always encourage people to attend Bellevue University should they be considering it because I had only positive experiences with the professors and coursework.”

Simandl, who took six years to complete her bachelor’s degree because she was working full-time, hopes to encourage other non-traditional students like her to consider pursuing their college education. She’s thankful for institutions like Bellevue University, who make it easy to do so.

“I think a lot of kids and young adults are feeling pressure to get it all done and be out on their own by 21 or 22 years old, but I feel very successful for my age, and I definitely went non-traditional with a longer undergrad experience,” she shared. “It’s OK to experience the world and take your time finding what you love. After graduation is when you are settling into your adult life, so revel in the opportunity to take on new experiences and find the path that’s best for you.”

Omahan Braxton Crowder, a young professional who participated in after-school programs when he was growing up and today is actively involved in directing multiple after-school programs for youth, has been named the recipient of the Ethical Leadership and Service Award by Bellevue University’s Ethical Insights Committee. The award was presented to Crowder in a ceremony at Monroe Middle School on Feb. 5, 2024. 

The son of a single, hard-working mom, Crowder was involved in the Monroe Middle School’s Activity Center and credits the center for playing a pivotal role in shaping his character and career path. Crowder is currently employed as Experience Manager at the Kiewit Luminarium and previously has worked as a YMCA Camp Counselor and as Site Director for after-school programs at the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo, Kids Can, Jackson Elementary, and as a consultant for MENTOR Nebraska.

Through these roles, Crowder has impacted youth across all parts of the Omaha metropolitan area. “His efforts show how one person can make a positive contribution that benefits many,” said Bellevue University President Mary Hawkins when presenting Crowder with the award. 

“Ethical leadership is all about doing the right thing even when you don’t think anyone is watching,” said Crowder. 

“Being able to see the impact of your actions is important,” Crowder said. “I remember being in after-school programs and the programs changing my life and changing my outlook. As I got older, I remembered those key skills I learned and they’ve helped me become the person I am today.”

Ethical Insights is a faculty-driven initiative which fosters the teaching and learning of ethics across the colleges at Bellevue University. The current members of the Ethical Insights Committee include Committee Chair Karla Carter, Associate Professor; Pat Artz, Associate Professor; Leo Mayhan, Assistant Professor; and Dr. Carlos Del Rio, Associate Professor. 

The Ethical Leadership Award is presented annually to a community member or student for outstanding leadership in ethics as demonstrated by professional and community service.

Bellevue University, a recognized national leader in preparing students for lifelong success with career-relevant knowledge and skills, has been recognized as one of the Best Open Enrollment Colleges Online 2024. 

The recognition comes from EdSmart, a leading educational resource, which compiles an annual ranking that highlights institutions that offer open admissions. Open admissions make higher education accessible to a wide range of students.

“Bellevue University has been fiercely open access since we opened our doors in 1966,” said Dr. Mary Hawkins, Bellevue University President. “What this means is that we’re committed to making sure all learners have the skills and support needed to achieve their goals.”

Bellevue University, which ranked sixth in the EdSmart list, offers more than 80 degree programs from the associate to the doctoral level, and many are offered fully online. The University also offers a number of skill-based certificates, including several where students can earn college credits that can later be applied to other degrees and credentials.

Right after high school, Mary Simmonds enrolled at Southwest Texas State. Life quickly got in the way, though, and she was only able to complete about half her studies.

Instead, Simmonds began a career in human resources — a field she initially entered based on her aptitude for it. She learned the role quickly, and the company she was working for invested in her growth by providing support for her to obtain a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.

But she wanted more. This led her to return to college – specifically to Bellevue University.

“I looked at options that would work for my life,” Simmonds explained. “I had three children living at home who were very busy. Bellevue University gave me some experiential learning credits and transferred all of my other credits in. I liked the cohort style and was able to complete my bachelor’s degree in management of human resources.”

Since earning her degree, Simmonds has worked her way up the HR ladder.

“I’ve also become more confident in how I deliver for my companies,” she said. “I’ve worked in nonprofit as a director of HR with full responsibility and in corporate in a similar role. Both provided me with a lot of knowledge and experience I continue to build upon.”

Today marks more than 30 years of Simmonds being an HR professional. She’s worked at organizations like the Omaha World-Herald, the Omaha Home for Boys, and Radio Engineering Industries. Simmonds currently serves as vice president of human resources for Marvel Medical Staffing, where she works with fellow Bellevue alumna Candace Clow, who founded the company. 

“She had a different experience than I did, as I was an adult learner and she was an athlete,” Simmonds shared. “We think it’s awesome we both had the same foundation though.”

Ultimately, what makes Simmonds most proud of her educational journey is the fact that she was able to return to college and earn her degree.

“I have the satisfaction of completing it after all of those years wanting to finish,” she said.

That move kickstarted Jameson’s undergraduate studies to earn a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management and personnel development. Shortly thereafter, Jameson found himself unemployed due to a company buy-out and subsequent workforce reduction.

“To make matters worse, I had a family of five, no insurance, and my wife had just been diagnosed with breast cancer,” he shared.

But he stayed the course, and says it was one of the single best decisions he’s ever made. In 2019, Jameson earned a Master of Science in Human Resource Strategic Management, as well.

“Today, two kids are grown and on their own, my youngest is a senior all-state volleyball player, and I am a highly compensated Chief Human Resources Officer for Marco Group Inc., a manufacturer of educational furniture, and a part-time Bellevue University adjunct professor,” said Jameson. “Bellevue made this possible for me.”

As a two-time graduate of Bellevue University, John Jameson feels the university has afforded him a number of experiences and growth opportunities.

“While working through and completing my education at Bellevue, I gained a far greater level of satisfaction and confidence to know that I can do anything I set my mind to do,” he shared.

In his role as adjunct professor, Jameson shares his expertise in human resources with both undergraduate and graduate students. He initially took the role as a way to give back to the university.

“Knowing what a Bellevue University master's degree had done for me, I had the desire to help others,” he said. “Twenty-twenty hindsight told me I should have done this years ago. However, helping others professionally and personally is something that gives me great joy. I wish I could do more.”

Teaching at the university gives his career a feeling of completeness, Jameson said, and it’s all because of Angie Longe, Program Director of the masters of human resource management program.

“When I talk about helping others personally and professionally, I would be remiss if I did not formally acknowledge Angie and her support through this journey,” he shared. “She is why I am an adjunct professor and able to round out my career by helping others achieve their dreams.”

Throughout his career, Jameson has achieved a lot himself. He’s spent a majority of it in operations, with 23 years in the airline industry and almost nine years in the trucking industry.

Some highlights that stand out to him the most include being promoted from a baggage handler to airport station manager within six months, operating as the number one CRJ regional airline in the world as the director of operations, and being acknowledged as the 2008 Mr. Missouri Superheavy Weight and Most Muscular Winner.

For Jameson, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bellevue University were monumental achievements, as well.

“Honestly, the entire process of learning something that I was thoroughly invested in became extremely enjoyable and addictive,” he shared. “My experience was capped off by attending the graduation ceremony and meeting some of the instructors. The Bellevue University graduation process is something I did not imagine, as it truly brings perspective to the journey and accomplishment.”

Originally, Lauren Jurek, who was born and raised in Bellevue, Nebraska, wasn’t even considering Bellevue University as an option for college. This changed when she was approached by the softball coach with an opportunity to earn her education while playing softball.

“When looking into it further — meeting with the faculty and staff and speaking with players about their experiences — it became clear that this is where I wanted to spend the next five years attending school,” she said. “While going from high school to college is enough of an adjustment for the traditional college student with new staff, faculty, classmates, teammates and the athletic expectations that come along with it, having an environment like the one Bellevue University provided gives students the support needed to be successful.”

Jurek attended Bellevue University from fall 2018 until May 2023, as she took her COVID-19 year of eligibility to continue playing on the softball team. In addition to her time on the field, Jurek served as a Residence and Student Life student worker, for which she was named the 2022-2023 Student Employee of the Year.

Jurek also kept busyas a double major in health science and public health in education, which she chose to pursue because the general concept of health science has always interested her.

“I knew I wanted to work with the public population, but when I first started college, I didn’t know how that’d play out,” she shared. “Within a couple of years of going to Bellevue, I realized nursing could be the right fit.”

Knowing she wanted to finish her softball career at Bellevue, Jurek started looking into Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs around the metro for post-graduation to make sure she had all the prerequisites necessary to start nursing classes right away.

Today, Jurek is pursuing her BSN degree at Clarkson College and working at a local hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant, where she’s gaining hands-on experience. She still frequently studies in Bellevue University’s campus library, as it’s close to home.

As Jurek reflects on her time at the university, some memories that stand out most were traveling the country with her teammates and attending different athletics events on campus.

“With many students showing up to events, it really brought the school community together,” she said. “The different student activities and events that were put on by Residence and Student Life were always fun, as well. From trivia night to bingo, bowling and movie nights, there was constantly events going on at campus.”

Jurek was also chosen to represent the softball team in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new field house on campus and achieved a number of softball accolades, including 1st Team NAIA All-American, Conference Pitcher of the Year and a three-time Omaha World Herald 1st Team All-Midlands Player.

But what impacted her time at Bellevue University the most were the faculty and staff she encountered.  

“Throughout my time at Bellevue, I’ve built friendships with my coaches, other athletic team’s coaches, administrators, deans and even the president of the university, because they’re always available,” she said.

Having close access to those kinds of mentors made a lasting impression on Jurek, especially as she enters a profession where she’ll help people from all kinds of backgrounds each and every day.

Tax season is upon us which means Bellevue University’s College of Business is partnering again with the Omaha EITC Coalition to help local residents prepare and file free individual tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Tax assistance will be available on Saturdays, starting Feb. 17, through April 6, 2024 on the University's main campus at the Freeman Lozier Library on an appointment basis. The library is located at 1028 Bruin Blvd. in Bellevue, Nebraska. Free parking is available in campus lots near the library.

“It’s a great way to serve the community and prepare our own students in important skills like client relations and tax preparation,” said Patrick Callan, Associate Professor of Accounting. “We hope to serve many individuals and families this tax season and look forward to our continued partnership with the Omaha EITC Coalition.”

“Bellevue University has a great reputation and offered the online format, which helped me work in HR and teach about HR,” she said. “Without this flexibility, I would not be able to share in real time how business happens in the business world.”

Motivated by Helping

Berry Barlow, who works at Midwest retail giant NFM (Nebraska Furniture Mart), said her passion for both her career and teaching come from the heart.

“I love working in the HR field, being innovative and learning how to create a work culture that values and respects individuals,” she said. She wanted to share this expertise, and found the perfect avenue with teaching human resources management at Bellevue University 15 years ago. ”It was a no brainer. I get energy from my students and the shared learning experience.”

Diving fully into the worlds of business and academia has helped Barlow make a bigger impact for both her employees and students.

“I actually do what I teach every day,” she said. “Doing them simultaneously helps me stay current in teaching, and helps me bring new ideas and perspectives that I get from students to the business world.  It is constant growth and learning.”

Connecting With Students

The University recently honored Barlow with the Lou Soukup Adjunct Faculty Award for her dedication to her students and her teaching.

“Being recognized by an organization that I hold in such high esteem affirms my choice of careers and employment,” she said. “I wish everyone could feel so validated by their employer and choice of profession!”

As an online teacher, Barlow finds meeting her students in person is incredibly rewarding. “I love when students request that I attend graduation,” she said. “It might be easy to feel a bit disconnected when you teach online. I try hard to make the work and interactions relevant and personalized, so being asked to watch a student at one of their biggest life achievements feels pretty special.”

ITF+ is the only single certification that covers all areas of IT foundations, making it an ideal starting point for non-technical professionals.

The grant funds will go toward increasing access to STEM and computer science education for Omaha metro area students. Students completing the multi-week summer boot camp will receive a certificate of completion and a voucher so they can take the actual CompTIA IT Fundamentals certification test at no cost. 

“The ITF+ certification bootcamp will introduce students to basic IT knowledge and skills and at the same time help bridge the digital divide,” explained Dr. Matt Davis, Dean of Bellevue University’s College of Engineering, Technology and Management. 

“We’re committed to investing in building the country’s skilled technical workforce and this Google grant helps further Bellevue University’s mission to make sure learners have the skills needed to make an impact in the global workforce,” said Dr. Davis.  

“In fact, I started and stopped college several times,” she said. “I was always enrolled in traditional college programs. These programs had very rigid schedules and minimal flexibility. As a stay-at-home mom by day with four small children and then working nights to make ends meet, there was no way I could complete these traditional programs.”

Once her youngest child started kindergarten, though, Maguire could finally commit fully to her dreams. She began her studies at Southeast Community College, where she earned an associate degree in long term care administration. Yet when she started to apply for jobs, she realized she was competing against applicants with bachelor’s degrees, so Maguire decided to continue her own education.

Bellevue University had a small office within the community college she attended, so one day, she met with a recruiter.

“I was excited to find out that a bachelor’s degree would only take me an additional two years, so I started right away,” she said.

Maguire enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Management program and grew to love Bellevue University almost instantly.

“Everyone at Bellevue is so supportive,” she said. “I was able to complete my courses around my home and work responsibilities, and I felt so encouraged and supported by the faculty and staff.”

Once she graduated with her bachelor’s degree, Maguire decided to open additional doors for herself and began the Master of Business Administration program.

“With my education, I could now find better paying jobs,” Maguire said.

She spent time in the aviation industry, beginning as a supervisor for an airline and then taking an administrative role at the airport. Later, Maguire was hired to be an accountant for the State of Nebraska by the Aeronautics Division.

“All of these types of jobs were something I had only dreamed about having just a few short years ago,” she said. “At that time, however, they seemed so far out of reach. Now, anything was possible.”

Furthering her education and skillset, Maguire also enrolled in the Doctor of Business Administration program at Bellevue University.

“I enjoyed the coursework, but what I absolutely loved was completing my research, which focused on workplace inclusion for people with autism spectrum disorder,” she shared. “As the mother of a child on the spectrum, this was something I had always been concerned about for my child.”

Maguire worked with a local program and examined what accommodations they had implemented that successfully assisted individuals on the spectrum with gaining and retaining lasting employment. Accommodations and ideas examined could easily be implemented in businesses everywhere — creating inclusive environments where everyone succeeds.

Even though Maguire has completed her doctoral studies, she plans to continue this research.

“I hope to present at conferences and even work with businesses to implement individual organizational inclusion programs,” she said. “I look forward to continuing to make meaningful contributions in any way I can indefinitely for organizations and individuals alike.”

Since receiving her doctorate, Maguire has also been teaching — a role that enables her to inspire other students like her.

“Finally achieving my educational dreams inspired me to help others do the same, and I absolutely love doing so,” she said. “As such, I have recently accepted a position teaching full-time as a faculty instructor in the business department of a local college. I am excited to continue supporting students as they grow and begin careers of their own.”
