Event Overview

Bellevue University will host the Empowered Caregiver Conference in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter. The event will bring caregivers, care partners, and professionals together to build skills and access resources related to dementia care. The conference will take place on campus and will include sessions led by educators from the Alzheimer’s Association.

Bellevue University Library Launches Novel Brews Series

Bellevue University Library and Bruin Blend have partnered to launch Novel Brews, a new author series designed to connect readers with authors through conversations about books, storytelling and the writing process.

The series will feature four author talks throughout the academic year. For each event, Bruin Blend, Bellevue University's on-campus coffee shop, will create a specialty beverage inspired by the featured author's work. Additional authors and event details will be announced throughout the year.

Erica Wright Opens the Series on Sept. 15

The first Novel Brews event will feature Erica Wright, author and Bellevue University instructor, on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Freeman/Lozier Library, located at 1028 Bruin Blvd. on the university's main campus.

Wright will join the event virtually, while attendees can participate in person in Library Classroom 480 to watch the livestreamed conversation or register to join the Zoom livestream from their own location. Registration is encouraged.

Earlier this year, Bellevue University announced the release of Wright's latest novel, The Museum of Unusual Occurrence. The Sept. 15 Novel Brews event gives readers an opportunity to hear directly from Wright about the development of the book, the launch of the Psychic City mystery series and her career as an author and educator.

Wright's featured novel follows Aly Orlean, who returns to her hometown after inheriting a museum filled with unusual exhibits. When a body is discovered inside one of the displays, she becomes involved in a murder investigation.

To commemorate Wright's appearance, Bruin Blend has created the Crimson Exhibit, a specialty drink inspired by The Museum of Unusual Occurrence. The beverage is the first in a series of drinks that will accompany Novel Brews events throughout the year.

About Erica Wright

A poet, novelist and educator, Wright teaches composition and literature courses at Bellevue University. According to Bellevue University's previous announcement about the book, the novel reflects Wright's interest in museums, places and how people navigate change when life takes an unexpected turn.

Thomas joins a group of speakers from across the community. His participation reflects Bellevue University’s role in contributing to public dialogue and knowledge exchange.

Thomas Brings Interdisciplinary Perspective to the Stage

Thomas studies philosophy, art, architecture, and design. He connects research with practice through work in visual art, writing, and design. His background includes time in Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan, which informs his focus on culture and global perspectives.

At Bellevue University, Thomas supports general education and student development. He focuses on applying concepts in academic, professional, and personal contexts. His work centers on helping students engage with ideas through practice.

Gen. Jack Keane Announced as 2026 Signature Event Speaker

Bellevue University has announced that Gen. Jack Keane, one of America's most respected and influential voices on national security and foreign policy, will be the featured speaker at its annual Signature Event set for Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, 7 p.m. 

The event will be held at the Holland Performing Arts Center located at 13th and Douglas streets in downtown Omaha. Admission is free, but attendees must RSVP. 

About General John M. “Jack” Keane, United States Army (Ret.)

General Jack Keane is widely recognized as one of our nation’s foremost authorities on foreign policy and national security. A distinguished military leader, accomplished strategist, and trusted voice on matters of global defense, he has devoted his life to the service of the United States and to the advancement of American security interests at home and abroad. 

General Keane serves as Chairman of the Institute for the Study of War and has been a longtime member of the Secretary of Defense Policy Board, advising four Secretaries of Defense over the course of his career. He has also served an unprecedented three times on the Congressional Commission on the National Defense Strategy, including the 2018, 2022, and 2026 commissions, underscoring the continued confidence placed in his judgment and experience. He also serves as a senior strategic analyst and commentator for FOX News.

A four-star general, General Keane completed 37 years of public service in December 2003, culminating in his appointment as Acting Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. In that role, he served as the Army’s chief operating officer, responsible for the leadership of 1.5 million soldiers and civilians across 120 countries and oversight of a $110 billion annual operating budget. 

General Keane was in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and played a significant role in supporting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. During the 9/11 wars General Keane conducted frequent trips to Iraq and Afghanistan on behalf of senior military and civilian defense officials. In 2006, he was invited to the Oval Office by President George W. Bush to discuss the war in Iraq, where he presented a strategic concept that became known as the troop surge and helped reshape American strategy. 

A career infantry paratrooper and combat veteran of the Vietnam War, General Keane commanded the 101st Airborne Division(Air Assault) and the XVIII Airborne Corps, among the most distinguished formations in the United States Army. He was decorated for valor and distinguished throughout his career for leadership, courage, and excellence in command. 

General Keane was commissioned through Army ROTC as a Distinguished Military Graduate at Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received a Master of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University and is a graduate of the Army War College and the Army Command and General Staff College. 

General Keane has numerous awards reflecting his decades of distinguished public service to include over 30 civilian honors and awards. Among these, he was the first military leader to receive the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented in 2018 at The Reagan Library. In 2020, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his extraordinary lifetime service to the nation. General Keane’s numerous military service medals and citations include two Defense and two Army Distinguished Service Medals, five Legions of Merit, the Silver Star, Bronze Star, three Vietnam Service medals, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and Ranger Tab, to list a few.

Bellevue University Participates as a National Host Site

Bellevue University’s Freeman/Lozier campus will serve as one of 65 host sites nationwide for TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, a coordinated national livestream event connecting communities across the country—and the only host site in Nebraska. Libraries and institutions nationwide will stream TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, creating local access points for shared civic engagement.

The livestream features more than 15 new TED Talks presented from Philadelphia focused on the evolution of democracy and its future. The symposium takes place as part of activities leading up to America’s 250th anniversary and includes speakers addressing civic participation, leadership, governance, and public life.

Bellevue’s Kirkpatrick Signature Series Challenges Students to Engage With American Values

Faculty Panel Highlights Civic Leadership and Education

Following the livestream, Bellevue University will host a faculty panel discussion on civic leadership and education as part of the University’s Kirkpatrick Signature Series (KSS). The KSS, considered the intellectual linchpin of a Bellevue University education, is a required undergraduate capstone consisting of nine credit hours across three courses: The Making of the Engaged Citizen, The Engaged Citizen in Action I and The Engaged Citizen in Action II (formerly titled American Vision and Values, Tradition and Change, and Freedom and Responsibility.)

The panel will explore how our country’s founding principles guide active citizenship and community stewardship, the goals of the Kirkpatrick Signature Series. Faculty members will further reflect on how our country’s founding principles, together with education, undergird students’ civic identity, promote engaged citizenship, and reinforce the responsibilities of informed citizens in a strong republic.

Keynote Spotlight: Dr. Temple Grandin

The highlight of this year’s conference is a keynote presentation by Dr. Temple Grandin, whose life and work have reshaped conversations around autism, neurodiversity, and inclusive thinking. Bellevue University’s Military Veteran Services Center (MVSC) is collecting donations now through Friday, Nov. 8 to fill backpacks with essential items for homeless military veterans served by Siena Francis House and New Visions Homeless Services.

The goal is to fill 100 backpacks for veterans in need in the local area. 

According to Ashlea Rodriguez, Manager of the Bellevue University Military Veteran Services Center, veterans experiencing homelessness tend to stay on the move instead of staying with a shelter long term.

Volunteer Participation and Distribution

The community is invited to take part in the Backpack Packing Party on Friday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. at the MVSC. Volunteers will help assemble the donated items into backpacks.

Constitution Day Event Details and Activities

Bellevue University students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the University’s Constitution Day celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will take place in the Margre H. Durham Student Center, located at 1008 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska.

The celebration will feature the League of Women Voters, offering information on voting rights, voter registration, and civic engagement resources. Attendees can register to vote, update voter information, and access resources on participating in democracy.

Conference Activities

Bellevue University hosted more than 60 undergraduate research students and academic leaders for the 3rd Annual DELFIN International Research Conference – U.S. Chapter. The conference is part of Programa DELFIN, which connects institutions across ten countries to support undergraduate research and academic exchange.

During the event, student researchers presented findings across multiple disciplines, including science, technology, health, education, and social sciences. Faculty mentors and institutional leaders participated in discussions focused on research opportunities and collaboration between institutions.

The conference brought together participants from Mexico, Latin America, and the United States. Bellevue University served as the second U.S. institution to host the event, following the University of Nebraska at Kearney, which houses the DELFIN U.S. Chapter.

Bellevue University will host the 3rd Annual DELFIN International Research Conference – U.S. Chapter as part of a program that supports undergraduate research and academic exchange. The event will bring together students, faculty mentors, and institutional leaders to share research and build connections across institutions.

The Programa Interinstitucional para el Fortalecimiento de la Investigación y el Posgrado del Pacífico, known as Programa DELFIN, includes member institutions across ten countries in the Americas. The program focuses on strengthening research and collaboration at the undergraduate level.

During the conference, undergraduate students will present research across disciplines, including science, technology, health, education, and social sciences. Faculty mentors and academic leaders will also discuss research opportunities and partnerships between institutions.

Bellevue University joins the University of Nebraska at Kearney as a host institution in the United States. The University of Nebraska at Kearney remains the first U.S. member of the DELFIN program and houses the U.S. chapter.

Celebrating Graduation and Student Achievement

On Saturday, June 7, more than 800 Bellevue University students will receive their diplomas during the University’s Spring Commencement ceremony at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The event will begin at 9:10 a.m. with a procession of graduates, followed by the ceremony at 9:30 a.m., and will be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.

According to University Registrar Colette Lewis, Bellevue University conferred 1,889 degrees between Sept. 30, 2024 and April 30, 2025, including 1,286 undergraduate, 593 graduate and 10 doctoral degrees. With this milestone, the University now has over 70,000 graduates worldwide, reflecting its sustained impact on learners and professionals across the globe.

Inspiring Stories and Commencement Events

This year’s student commencement speaker is Starr Shamp, who earned her Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Shamp’s journey through graduate school was anything but traditional. While pursuing her degree, she underwent treatment for stage IV breast cancer, maintained a full-time job, got married, and became a mother—all while staying focused on completing her education. She credits Bellevue University faculty and staff for their support and understanding, especially the encouragement to prioritize her well-being.

The commencement speaker will be Dana C. Bradford, CEO and majority owner of C3 Brands, a consumer goods company based in Omaha, Nebraska. 

In addition to the main ceremony, Bellevue University will host its Doctoral Hooding Ceremony on Friday, June 6, at 5:35 p.m. on campus, with a livestream available via Zoom. 

Graduates, families, and friends are also invited to an Open House earlier that day from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Margre H. Durham Student Center.

Gen. James N. Mattis (USMC, Ret.) credited Bellevue University’s required undergraduate Kirkpatrick Signature Series courses for bringing him to Omaha to keynote the University’s 13^th annual Signature Event speaker program October 3 at the Holland Center for the Performing Arts. The former U.S. Secretary of Defense provided an audience of 700-plus, including alumni, community leaders  and others, with insightful views on the military, international relations, America’s role of global leadership, and the vital role of civics education programs like the Signature Series. Excerpts follow from his conversation with moderator Mike Cassling, an Omaha business leader and former University Board Chair.

A SERVICE CAREER

Mattis, 72, a Richland, Washington, native, was 18 when he took the oath to defend the Constitution as a U.S. Marine in 1969, during the Vietnam War when the military draft was in effect. “I just went in to do my two years. At the time, the Constitution was just something I swore to defend,” he said. “I probably would not have joined of my own free will, but my parents were from the Greatest Generation (World War II).” Commissioned as a 2^nd Lieutenant after college, he rose to the Marines’ highest rank, four-star General, at one point commanding all American forces in the Middle East, retiring in 2013. He was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Defense in 2017, and served two years during the Trump presidency.

THE CONSTITUTION

 In 1976, the Bicentennial of America’s Declaration of Independence from British rule, Mattis’s commanding officer gave him a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution. “I fell in love with the Constitution,” he recalled. “Every year since, I have read it, and having traveled the world, it has sunken into me how doggone lucky we are that we had the founding fathers we did!” Signature Event attendees were able to take home a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution as they departed the event at the Holland Center.

THE MILITARY’S MISSION

“Tactics and weapons change in the military all the time, but the mission remains very singular, that is, to defend the Constitution…The concern that I have today is that the polarization of American society can seep into the military ranks.” Mattis cited a brief telegram President Abraham Lincoln sent to Union Commander Ulysses S. Grant in February 1865, when the Civil War was still raging. “‘Let nothing which is transpiring delay, interrupt or distract from your military plans and operations.’ In other words, ‘Military, you just protect the Republic. Don’t get involved in the political side of it.’ Politics in the media also is concerning, he said. “The television news shows now seem to be telling the audience to distrust the other half of America.”

SPACE, CYBERSPACE, AND BEYOND

Warfare continues to evolve, according to Mattis. “I think we recognize there’s a new domain for the military, and that’s Cyber (Cybersecurity). Today the military’s mission is to defend the country against external threats, including space and cyberspace and technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and propaganda, as well as (threats from) land, sea and air.”

CHINA AND TAIWAN

Practical, diplomacy sometimes can get results formal talks cannot, Mattis said, citing nuclear disarmament agreements between the U.S. and Russia during the Cold War in the 1980s that resulted in a 75% reduction in nuclear weapons using a philosophy called ‘Trust, but verify.’ “I don’t think we have any of those practical philosophical discussions going on between Washington and Beijing now. We need to have those.” He said Allied efforts will be paramount in protecting Taiwan’s sovereignty from a Chinese takeover. “The ‘one-China, two-systems’ approach for Hong Kong and Taiwan specifies peaceful resolution of issues. We never said that the 23 million people living on Taiwan could be forcibly invaded along the lines of what Putin has done in Ukraine.”

NORTH KOREA

Under the dictatorial rule of Kim Jong-un, North Korea has resumed nuclear weapons and missile testing, despite western economic sanctions and diplomatic efforts to discourage them. “With North Korea, you have an unaccountable, mercurial leader who literally cares not a whit for his own people. So we are going to have to align allies and economic motives and try to get China on board. That’s another reason why we need philosophical discussions with China,” Mattis said.

IRAN

China is also a problem with Iran, where there are demonstrations against the theocratic regime, with beatings of young people in the streets, threats of death to Israel and the United States, and suppression of women’s rights. “Our problem is not with the people (of Iran), it’s with the regime.” Diplomatic efforts, like the successful Abraham Accords to normalize relations between Israel and some Middle Eastern nations, are helping to bring peace to the region, he said.

RUSSIA AND UKRAINE

“I think what (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wants to do, strategically, is restore the ‘Russian Core,’—Russia, Belarus and Ukraine—and break up NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the European Union (EU) and the United States’ link to the EU. Unfortunately, he didn’t read the Ukrainian peoples’ minds, thinking he was going to be welcomed there. They (Ukrainians) want nothing to do with it.” Mattis favors Ukrainian conventional weapons at whatever level needed to stop Russia but not nuclear or chemical weapons. “I think we can no longer sit here and watch murders go on. If we can hold them (allies) together through the coming winter, Putin is going to be in a very difficult spot.”

NATO AND THE EU

“Thank goodness for NATO. It is absolutely critical to defending American security. They (NATO member nations) have got to pay more, but don’t lose sight of the fact that we need NATO now, more than ever, if we want to keep peace in the world,” Mattis said, adding that a strong EU also is essential.

AMERICA, A REPOSITORY OF HOPE

Calling America “a repository of hope,” which requires deposits, as well as withdrawals, Mattis said he accepts only five percent of the public speaking invitations he receives. He came to Omaha because of Bellevue University’s Kirkpatrick Signature Series courses, which explore foundational documents like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, and encourage civic service and engagement.  The General concluded with the story of a soon-to-be-imprisoned Iraqi resistance fighter captured while planting an improvised explosive device (IED). The young man asked him, “Do you think that if I am a model prisoner, someday my family and I can come to America?”

Those essential topics will be the focus of a public Constitution Day event to be held at Bellevue University on Thursday, Sept. 15 starting at 1 p.m. The event will be held in the Freeman Lozier Library, 1028 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska 68005, in Library Classroom 480. It is free and open to the public, as well as  to University students, staff and faculty.

The keynote speaker will be Kent Warneke, longtime Nebraska news editor. He will discuss the role of the editor in balancing the interests of thousands of readers or viewers who have a right to  information, and who in many cases need the information, balanced against the concerns, wishes and desires of others, including the right to privacy.. Warneke, whose appearance is made possible through Humanities Nebraska, will engage the audience in thinking through “news judgment” – what it is and why it's important. Those in attendance will gain insight into the decision-making process of determining what stories should be pursued, how stories are verified, and the process of deciding what to publish.

According to event organizer Lisa Cuevas-Jorgensen, attendees will be able to gain insight into the decision-making process of determining what stories should be pursued, how stories are verified, and the process of deciding what to publish. “This presentation explores the complex issues related to several of the rights guaranteed through the U.S. Constitution, including freedom of the press and freedom  of expression, balanced against individuals' rights to privacy.”

Prior to Warneke's presentation at 1 p.m., Bellevue University students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Constitution Day activities in the University's Margre H. Durham Student Center. 

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The federally mandated observance also recognizes all those who possess U.S. citizenship.

Bellevue University’s Constitution Day event is presented as a community service of the Kirkpatrick Signature Series (KSS) on American Vision and Values. The Series, which is required for all undergraduate students, highlights the importance of active citizenship in a rapidly changing world; one in which popular government, Western tradition and American values are sometimes severely tested.
