Event Overview

Bellevue University will host the Empowered Caregiver Conference in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association Nebraska Chapter. Bellevue University Library Launches Novel Brews Series

Bellevue University Library and Bruin Blend have partnered to launch Novel Brews, a new author series designed to connect readers with authors through conversations about books, storytelling and the writing process.

The series will feature four author talks throughout the academic year. For each event, Bruin Blend, Bellevue University's on-campus coffee shop, will create a specialty beverage inspired by the featured author's work. Additional authors and event details will be announced throughout the year.

Erica Wright Opens the Series on Sept. 15

The first Novel Brews event will feature Erica Wright, author and Bellevue University instructor, on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Freeman/Lozier Library, located at 1028 Bruin Blvd. on the university's main campus.

Wright will join the event virtually, while attendees can participate in person in Library Classroom 480 to watch the livestreamed conversation or register to join the Zoom livestream from their own location. Registration is encouraged.

Earlier this year, Bellevue University announced the release of Wright's latest novel, The Museum of Unusual Occurrence. The Sept. 15 Novel Brews event gives readers an opportunity to hear directly from Wright about the development of the book, the launch of the Psychic City mystery series and her career as an author and educator.

Wright's featured novel follows Aly Orlean, who returns to her hometown after inheriting a museum filled with unusual exhibits. When a body is discovered inside one of the displays, she becomes involved in a murder investigation.

To commemorate Wright's appearance, Bruin Blend has created the Crimson Exhibit, a specialty drink inspired by The Museum of Unusual Occurrence. The beverage is the first in a series of drinks that will accompany Novel Brews events throughout the year.

About Erica Wright

A poet, novelist and educator, Wright teaches composition and literature courses at Bellevue University. According to Bellevue University's previous announcement about the book, the novel reflects Wright's interest in museums, places and how people navigate change when life takes an unexpected turn.

The Cyber League is available to students in Bellevue University’s College of Science and Technology. Students participate in the National Cyber League, a virtual cybersecurity competition that provides individual and team challenges focused on applying cybersecurity knowledge and skills.

Students demonstrate skills beyond the classroom

The Cyber League gives students an opportunity to apply cybersecurity skills outside the classroom and demonstrate what they can do in a competitive environment. Participants receive a Scouting Report that documents their performance across cybersecurity skill categories, giving students information they can use as they pursue internships and employment.

“The Scouting Report gives students something they can point to when they are competing for jobs against other candidates who also have bachelor’s degrees. They have demonstrated they have the drive to work on honing their skills above and beyond degree requirements. Honored for Service to Education and Community

Bellevue University Vice President of Advancement John Erickson has been named a 2026 Papillion La Vista Community Schools Hall of Fame honoree in the Community Booster category. PLCS recognized Erickson during the Foundation’s 17th Annual Back to School Soiree on Aug. 15 as one of five individuals selected for induction.

A graduate of Papillion-La Vista High School's Class of 1980, Erickson's connection to the district spans decades. As a student, he served as class president, competed on the school's first Class A state championship tennis team and participated in a variety of school activities and organizations.

Building Support for Students and Schools

For more than 35 years, Erickson has worked in fundraising and development roles that support educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. His career has included leadership positions with the University of Nebraska Foundation, Madonna Foundation and the Papillion La Vista Community Schools Foundation, where he served as executive director for more than 10 years.

During his tenure with the Papillion La Vista Community Schools Foundation, Erickson helped connect community stakeholders with opportunities that supported students, teachers, families and district initiatives. His work contributed to the launch and growth of the foundation's endowment program, named funds, the Skilled & Technical Trades Collaboration Model and Kids Club. Today, Erickson serves as Vice President of Advancement at Bellevue University, where he leads efforts that support student success, community partnerships and institutional growth.

AVCA Recognizes Academic Achievement

For the 13th time in school history, the Bellevue University volleyball team has earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2025-26 academic year, the AVCA announced today. BU was among a record number of volleyball programs to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award. More than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintained a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale) to earn the award for their classroom excellence during the recently completed academic year.

AVCA Expands Academic Recognition

This is the second season the AVCA has named a Team Academic Champion for each collegiate division. The 20 programs are being added to this exclusive list for having the highest GPAs in their respective divisions. The AVCA also celebrates programs in the top 20 percent for their division by recognizing them with the Team Academic Honor Roll distinction.

The Team Academic Award was earned by 10 teams that also won national collegiate championships on the court and in the sand during the 2025-26 season. There are also four schools whose women's, men's, and beach teams are all being honored: Barry University, Pepperdine University, Stanford University, and the University of Hawaii.

Bruins Deliver Success on the Court

The Bellevue University volleyball team finished the 2025 season ranked No. 7 in the final NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, capping a year highlighted by the selection of three All-Americans: Eve Fountain, Kealy Kiviniemi and Savanna Berger.

The Bruins concluded the 2025 campaign with a 29-5 overall record and a 20-2 mark in Frontier Conference play, finishing second in the league's regular-season standings and as the runner-up in the Frontier Conference Tournament. Supporting Purpose Through Creative Expression

Hero’s Encore provides a nine-month performance and resiliency program that helps participants develop musical skills, build confidence, and share their personal stories through songwriting and public performances. The nonprofit uses creative expression and community engagement to support post-service transition and personal growth.

Founded in 2025 by Taylor Ullom, David J. Mike, James Hoy, and Jordan Ullom, Hero’s Encore was created by a team with extensive experience serving military-connected communities. The organization evolved from more than a decade of support through a national music program that graduated more than 200 Nebraska veterans. Today, Hero’s Encore continues that work while expanding services to include first responders and transitioning service members.

• Dr. Jerome A. Lewis, associate professor of psychology at Bellevue University, authored Moral Psychology: A Narrative Approach.

The book examines questions such as how people determine right from wrong, why individuals reach different moral conclusions about the same behavior and how emotions, intuition, reasoning and identity influence moral judgments. Exploring a Growing Field of Research

Moral Psychology: A Narrative Approach leads readers through an interdisciplinary field that draws from psychology, philosophy, neuroscience and related areas of study. The book explores how people make moral decisions, evaluate behavior and develop values throughout their lives.

Dr. Lewis's research interests include moral psychology, victimology and social cognition. Through Bellevue University's Victim Role Research Group, he studies the victim role, prosocial behavior and how people evaluate everyday moral transgressions.

Program Structure Supports Professional Growth

Bellevue University’s Master of Science in Human Resource Strategic Management is designed to help professionals expand their knowledge of workforce planning, organizational leadership and strategic decision-making. Research Recognized at National Conference

Ivana Castellanos Morales received the Best Poster Presentation award during the fourth annual DELFIN U.S. Chapter Conference on July 23 at Wichita State University. Undergraduate students from Latin American countries presented summer research projects developed during a seven-week research experience.

Castellanos Morales, a student at Universidad Anáhuac Veracruz, was one of seven students who participated in the program through Bellevue University. Students representing Bellevue University, Wichita State University and the University of Texas at El Paso shared research findings during the conference.

Research Focuses on Environmental Applications

Working under the mentorship of Dr. John Kyndt, professor of microbiology, nutrition and sustainability at Bellevue University, Castellanos Morales analyzed genomes of newly identified bacterial species found in extreme environments. Her research focused on bacteria capable of surviving in hydrocarbon-contaminated environments. Microbial samples were collected from beaches in Veracruz and Tabasco, Mexico, following oil spills earlier in 2026 that affected fishing, tourism and local ecosystems.

The research is part of an ongoing collaboration between Kyndt and Dr. María Magdalena Uribe Flores, Castellanos Morales' research advisor at Universidad Anáhuac Veracruz in Xalapa, Mexico.

The project examined how these microorganisms break down hydrocarbons, including contaminants associated with oil spills. Researchers hope the findings will advance understanding of how bacteria function in polluted environments and support future environmental remediation efforts in areas affected by contamination.

About the DELFIN Program

The Inter-Institutional Program for Strengthening of Research and Graduate Studies in the Pacific, widely known as Programa DELFIN, began in Mexico to encourage student interest in research, strengthen collaboration among universities and motivate young people to contribute through academic preparation.

Participants join research projects led by faculty members at partner institutions and may complete their placements in person or virtually. Opportunities span a range of disciplines and extend beyond laboratory-based research and the traditional sciences.

The session examines how Bellevue University designed the Applying AI in Higher Education professional development program to help faculty navigate the rapid pace of change in generative AI. Rather than relying on one-time workshops, the program provides ongoing opportunities for learning through asynchronous coursework, live discussions, reflection activities, and peer engagement.

As generative AI continues to influence teaching and learning, many faculty members are seeking guidance on topics such as assessment design, ethics, transparency, and student use of AI tools. Bellevue University has been named to Phi Theta Kappa's 2026 Transfer Honor Roll for its support of transfer students and transfer pathways.

Phi Theta Kappa recognized 275 four-year colleges and universities on this year's Honor Roll. Institutions were evaluated using data from the National Student Clearinghouse and PTK Connect, Phi Theta Kappa's online platform that connects community college students with transfer opportunities.

The evaluation measures how institutions support transfer students from admission through graduation. Colleges are assessed in five areas:

For the seventh-straight season, and eighth time overall, the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) recognized the Bellevue University baseball team today as the Bruins earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award, presented by Sports Attack.

Bellevue was one of 36 NAIA schools to be honored with the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award.

Teams from every level of college and high school baseball were honored with this year's award, highlighting programs coached by ABCA members that posted a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2025-26 academic year.

This year's award recognized over 320 high school programs and more than 500 collegiate programs.

Award Criteria

Coaches were able to nominate their teams for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award following the conclusion of their spring semesters before the nomination deadline of July 17. To be honored, teams had to meet the following criteria:

• Must be a high school or college team
• Head coach must be a current ABCA member
• The team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2023-24 academic year

Bellevue Baseball Continues Tradition of Excellence

Bellevue baseball wrapped up the 2026 season with a 50-6 overall record, going 24-0 to win the Frontier Conference regular season championship. During the postseason, BU won the Frontier Conference Tournament title, qualified for their 28th NAIA National Tournament, and hosted an Opening Round Bracket for the sixth time.

Bellevue University designed the MSW program to prepare students for advanced generalist practice and specialized roles. Students study social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The MSW program includes practicum education as a required component. Students complete 920 hours of supervised field experience across foundation and advanced levels. In the advanced year, students select either an Advanced Generalist or Military Social Work specialization. Bellevue University awarded Keith Edquist an Honorary Doctor of Commerce in recognition of his sustained leadership across business, civic service, and higher education.

Updated Program Structure Supports Working Nurses

Bellevue University redesigned its RN to BSN program to create a more efficient pathway for registered nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree. The updated 95-credit structure reflects how nurses enter the program—with significant prior coursework and professional experience—and allows them to focus on the competencies needed to advance in today’s healthcare environment.

The program serves registered nurses who hold an associate degree or diploma and want to build on their existing education. Students complete nine courses in sequence within a cohort. Each course runs six weeks, and students take one course at a time while continuing to work.

The curriculum includes 32 nursing credit hours within the 95-credit bachelor’s degree. Students can transfer 60+ credits and apply prior coursework toward degree completion.

Applied Learning Connects Coursework to Practice

The program integrates a practicum into the final course. Students can complete a project at their current workplace or an approved local healthcare organization, focusing on leadership, quality improvement, and performance outcomes within their work environment.

Coursework covers professional nursing practice, leadership, informatics, research, population health, and healthcare regulation. Students apply evidence-based practice and use healthcare data to support patient care and organizational goals. Programs Address Service Delivery Across Settings

The Telemental Health Certificate covers delivery of counseling services through digital platforms. Students study legal requirements, standards, technology use, and client engagement. Coursework addresses service delivery across populations and settings. The program requires four courses a total of 12 credit hours. 

Together, the certificates address how counseling professionals deliver care in different formats. The programs provide options for current students in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program or already licensed professionals who want to expand how they structure and deliver services.

Gen. Jack Keane Announced as 2026 Signature Event Speaker

Bellevue University has announced that Gen. Jack Keane, one of America's most respected and influential voices on national security and foreign policy, will be the featured speaker at its annual Signature Event set for Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, 7 p.m. 

The event will be held at the Holland Performing Arts Center located at 13th and Douglas streets in downtown Omaha. Admission is free, but attendees must RSVP. 

About General John M. “Jack” Keane, United States Army (Ret.)

General Jack Keane is widely recognized as one of our nation’s foremost authorities on foreign policy and national security. A distinguished military leader, accomplished strategist, and trusted voice on matters of global defense, he has devoted his life to the service of the United States and to the advancement of American security interests at home and abroad. 

General Keane serves as Chairman of the Institute for the Study of War and has been a longtime member of the Secretary of Defense Policy Board, advising four Secretaries of Defense over the course of his career. He has also served an unprecedented three times on the Congressional Commission on the National Defense Strategy, including the 2018, 2022, and 2026 commissions, underscoring the continued confidence placed in his judgment and experience. He also serves as a senior strategic analyst and commentator for FOX News.

A four-star general, General Keane completed 37 years of public service in December 2003, culminating in his appointment as Acting Chief of Staff and Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. In that role, he served as the Army’s chief operating officer, responsible for the leadership of 1.5 million soldiers and civilians across 120 countries and oversight of a $110 billion annual operating budget. 

General Keane was in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and played a significant role in supporting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. During the 9/11 wars General Keane conducted frequent trips to Iraq and Afghanistan on behalf of senior military and civilian defense officials. In 2006, he was invited to the Oval Office by President George W. Bush to discuss the war in Iraq, where he presented a strategic concept that became known as the troop surge and helped reshape American strategy. 

A career infantry paratrooper and combat veteran of the Vietnam War, General Keane commanded the 101st Airborne Division(Air Assault) and the XVIII Airborne Corps, among the most distinguished formations in the United States Army. He was decorated for valor and distinguished throughout his career for leadership, courage, and excellence in command. 

General Keane was commissioned through Army ROTC as a Distinguished Military Graduate at Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received a Master of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University and is a graduate of the Army War College and the Army Command and General Staff College. 

General Keane has numerous awards reflecting his decades of distinguished public service to include over 30 civilian honors and awards. Among these, he was the first military leader to receive the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Award, presented in 2018 at The Reagan Library. In 2020, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House, the nation’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his extraordinary lifetime service to the nation. Bellevue University promotes access to EMDR Basic Training that introduces clinicians to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. Participants complete Part I and Part II training and apply concepts through guided consultation sessions that reinforce clinical use.

Scholarships Awarded at April Conference

The Nebraska Counseling Association presented the scholarships during its conference on April 24 at Bellevue University. The event brought together counseling and mental health professionals and included sessions on practice, ethics, and assessment. The association awards scholarships each year to support students who pursue counseling education and training.

Preparing Students for Counseling Careers

Spraling and Wistrom are students in Bellevue University’s Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, a CACREP-accredited graduate program aligned with national licensure standards. The program prepares students to pursue licensure through coursework in counseling theory, ethics, assessment, and diagnosis, combined with supervised practicum and internship experiences totaling 700 clinical hours.

Students in the program develop skills in assessment, case conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment planning, while building competency in multicultural counseling, advocacy, and professional practice. Barnes’ course, BMAL 211: Business Communication in a Digital World, is part of Bellevue’s bachelor’s program in Business Management and Leadership. The BMAL 211 course was selected for its demonstrated excellence across four core areas of online teaching: course design, interaction and collaboration, assessment, and learner support.

Barnes’ recognition places her among a select group of educators worldwide whose work advances the quality and impact of digital learning. Bellevue University Participates as a National Host Site

Bellevue University’s Freeman/Lozier campus will serve as one of 65 host sites nationwide for TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, a coordinated national livestream event connecting communities across the country—and the only host site in Nebraska. Libraries and institutions nationwide will stream TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, creating local access points for shared civic engagement.

The livestream features more than 15 new TED Talks presented from Philadelphia focused on the evolution of democracy and its future. The symposium takes place as part of activities leading up to America’s 250th anniversary and includes speakers addressing civic participation, leadership, governance, and public life.

The KSS, considered the intellectual linchpin of a Bellevue University education, is a required undergraduate capstone consisting of nine credit hours across three courses: The Making of the Engaged Citizen, The Engaged Citizen in Action I and The Engaged Citizen in Action II (formerly titled American Vision and Values, Tradition and Change, and Freedom and Responsibility.)

The panel will explore how our country’s founding principles guide active citizenship and community stewardship, the goals of the Kirkpatrick Signature Series. Faculty members will further reflect on how our country’s founding principles, together with education, undergird students’ civic identity, promote engaged citizenship, and reinforce the responsibilities of informed citizens in a strong republic.

More Than 700 Students to Receive Degrees

Bellevue University will award degrees to more than 700 students during its Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 6. Graduates represent undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across the University.

Doors to the Mid‑America Center will open at 8:00 a.m. The ceremony will begin with a processional at 9:10 a.m., followed by the commencement program at 9:30 a.m. The University will provide a livestream option for guests who are unable to attend in person.

According to University Registrar Colette Lewis, Bellevue University conferred 1,815 degrees between Sept. 2025 through April 2026. The University now has more than 70,000 graduates worldwide.

Commencement Speakers

The ceremony will feature Dr. Bill Lydiatt, CEO of Clarkson Institute. Dr. Lydiatt also serves as a professor of surgery at Creighton University and was the 2024–2025 past president of the American Head and Neck Society. His career includes senior leadership roles in healthcare administration, clinical practice, and academic medicine, with a focus on expanding access to care, improving quality outcomes, and developing organizational leadership.

This year’s spring student commencement speaker is Shakori D. Colen, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Bellevue. Colen grew up in San Diego, California, and has called Omaha, Nebraska, home since 2015. She completed her degree while working full time and raising her son as a single mother. 

In her address titled “Right On Time,” Colen will reflect on her return to college while balancing full-time work, online coursework, and family responsibilities. Bellevue University Esports secured a milestone victory by capturing the program’s first Apex Legends national championship at the Octane Collegiate League Season 4: Championship, known as the Queen City Championship. The title continues a strong championship tradition for Bellevue Esports. Earlier this season, the Bruins claimed a national title at the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Showdown in Overwatch 2, adding to a previous Bluegrass Showdown championship in 2024. The Apex Legends victory represents the program’s third national championship overall.

Consistency Leads to the Biggest Win

The Bruins entered the 2025–26 season ranked No. 2 in the preseason power rankings and remained among the nation’s top teams throughout the year. Bellevue placed fourth in the Stage 1 (Fall) Finals and second in the Stage 2 (Spring) Finals while accumulating enough points to qualify for the national championship.

At the Queen City Championship, Bellevue made its intentions clear early. The Bruins dominated Saturday group play with two first-place finishes and advanced to the Championship Sunday as the No. 1 overall seed in a field featuring the top 30 teams in the country.

Championship Sunday Delivers the Title

Championship Sunday used a match-point format, requiring teams to reach 60 points before becoming eligible to win the title with a first-place finish. After a 20th-place result in Game 1, Bellevue responded with a decisive Game 2 win and surged up the standings.

By Game 4, Bellevue became the first team to reach match point following a 3-vs-1 finish by team captain Jason “Jukezy” Zajac. In Game 6, Bellevue and Fisher College both entered on match point. The Bruins eliminated Fisher in the final engagement to secure the Apex Legends national championship.

Zero-tolerance policies were originally designed to create safe learning environments by mandating severe consequences for certain behavior, including weapons possession, drug offenses and acts of violence. Overtime,owever, educators, policymakers and school safety practitioners have raised concerns about the unintended consequences of such policies, particularly their effects on marginalized student groups and their contribution to exclusionary discipline practices.

For school resource officers, understanding the individuals most at risk for zero-tolerance violations is essential. Predictive indicators can help SROs intervene earlier, support struggling students, and engage proactively rather than reactively. Despite the volume of national discussion around zero tolerance, relatively little empirical research identifies specific predictor variables that can guide early-warning and prevention strategies inside schools.

This article highlights key findings from a doctoral dissertation study examining predictors of zero-tolerance violations, with direct implications for school safety practice. The results offer SROs actionable strategies for daily operations, including identifying patterns, enhancing communication with school staff and improving student outcomes through prevention-focused approaches.

Purpose & Methods

The study was designed to answer three core questions:

1. What behavioral, academic or demographic factors predict the likelihood of a student committing a zero-tolerance offense?
    
2. How do the predictors differ between middle school and high school students?
    
3. How can SROs and school personnel use the predictors to strengthen prevention efforts?
    

Understanding the behavioral predictors of zero-tolerance violations enables SROs to collaborate with administrators, counselors and teachers to identify students who may require additional support before the behavior escalates.

The study uses archival data from a mid-sized suburban school district. The dataset includes:

• Student demographics (grade level, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic indicators).
   
• Attendance records.
   
• Prior behavioral infractions.
   
• Classroom and school discipline reports.
   
• Zero-tolerance outcomes.

A quantitative statistical model (logistic regression) is used to determine which variables are most strongly associated with zero-tolerance violations. The key variables analyzed include:

• Prior suspensions.
   
• Detentions.
   
• Classroom behavior referrals.
   
• Teacher notes on conduct.
   
• Chronic absenteeism.
   
• Grade level and age.
   
• Socioeconomic indicators.
   
• Special education status.

While the detailed statistics are available in the full dissertation, this article focuses on the findings with the greatest value for school safety practitioners.

Key Findings

1. Prior Behavior Is the Strongest Predictor

Students included in the study with a history of disciplinary incidents were found to be significantly more likely to commit zero-tolerance violations. Repeated classroom disruptions, ongoing disrespect or defiance incidents, aggressive or verbal conflicts, and previous suspensions or administrative referrals were found to be highly predictive of zero-tolerance violations. While past behavior does not ensure zero-tolerance incidents will occur, it is an early warning indicator. SROs can use prior behavior to identify students who may benefit from mentorship or intervention.

2. Chronic Absenteeism Strongly Predicts Risk

Students with high absenteeism, both excused and unexcused, were more likely to violate zero-tolerance policies. Notable attendance patterns included students missing more than 10 percent of school days, frequent tardiness and repeated early dismissals. Among the examined population, chronic absenteeism often overlapped with other risk factors like disengagement, academic frustration and school avoidance. SROs, therefore, should treat attendance as a safety indicator; students who rarely attend school often struggle with social and behavioral expectations upon return, creating opportunities for conflict.

3. Classroom Behavior Referrals Are a Key Early Indicator

Referrals for persistent talking out or refusal to follow directions, classroom disruption, oppositional behavior and minor physical conflicts with peers correlated strongly with later zero-tolerance violations. The low-level behaviors were often precursors to more serious conduct issues, highlighting the fact that even minor referrals reveal patterns. SROs can map behavior patterns with administrators and use them to target early intervention.

4. Middle School Students Are Different From High School Students

The study found important age-level differences. For middle school students, impulsivity-related behaviors were more predictive, peer conflict was more common and emotional-regulation challenges played a larger role than for high school students. High schoolers involved in zero-tolerance incidents were likely to exhibit absenteeism, academic struggles and behavioral issues due to off-campus influences and social group involvement (peer pressure, older peers). SROs must therefore recognize that their intervention strategies should be age specific. Middle school students need proactive relationship-building and conflict resolution training. High school students benefit from mentorship, attendance interventions and targeted support around peer influences.

5. Demographics Should Be Used Selectively

Some demographic variables showed statistical correlations consistent with national data, but the study results emphasized they should never be used as predictors in isolation. Instead, behavioral, attendance, social indicators and other contextual factors should guide SRO decision-making and interventions.

Implications for School Resource Officers

This study offers the following actionable steps that SROs can use immediately to improve school safety:

1. Use Data to Identify At-Risk Students Early

• SROs should collaborate weekly or monthly with:
   i. School administrators.
   ii. Data teams.
   iii. School counselors.
   iv. Behavioral specialists.
   
• Key data SROs can request or participate in reviewing:
   i. Attendance reports.
   ii. Discipline summaries.
   iii. Patterns of classroom referrals.
   iv. Prior-year conduct data.
   
• The approach helps SROs focus prevention efforts on students showing early warning signs.

2. Develop Targeted Mentorship Opportunities

• Students with repeated referrals or absenteeism benefit from:
   i. Informal check-ins.
   ii. “Coffee with a cop”-style conversations.
   iii. Positive reinforcement for small successes.
   iv. Guidance on conflict resolution.
   
• When SROs build trust early, they reduce the likelihood of escalation.

3. Strengthen School-Police Communication

• SROs should help ensure:
   i. Teachers know when to involve the SRO versus when to use internal discipline channels.
   ii. Administrators share relevant behavioral patterns.
   iii. SROs understand the school’s discipline philosophy.
   
• Research shows that schools with strong communication have relatively few severe incidents.

4. Support Alternatives to Zero-Tolerance Responses

• While some situations require immediate action, many students benefit from alternatives, such as:
   i. Restorative practices.
   ii. Social-emotional learning interventions.
   iii. Behavior intervention plans.
   iv. Multi-tiered support systems.
   v. Peer mediation.
   
• SROs play an important role in connecting students to these options.

5. Create an Intervention Plan for High-Risk Patterns

• Focus on students exhibiting multiple predictors, such as:
   i. Prior incidents.
   ii. Attendance problems.
   iii. Behavioral referrals.
   
• SROs should coordinate a multidisciplinary support plan with:
   i. Counselors.
   ii. Parents.
   iii. Teachers.
   iv. Coaches or mentors.
   v. School administration.
   
• A team-based approach has been shown to reduce severe incidents dramatically.

Policy Recommendations

The results of this study also offer a recommended course of action for school administrators and district leaders.

The administrators should consider:

1. Replacing Generic Zero-Tolerance Policies With Tiered Models

• A tiered discipline system allows:
   i. Early intervention.
   ii. Graduated consequences.
   iii. More consistent administrative decisions.

2. Investing in Cross-Training Between SROs and Educators

• Joint training improves:
   i. De-escalation.
   ii. Trauma-sensitive practices.
   iii. Communication.
   iv. Student expectation consistency.

3. Using Predictive Indicators in Prevention Programs

• Schools should incorporate attendance, behavior and referral patterns into:
   i. Early-warning systems.
   ii. Behavioral support referrals.
   iii. Case management meetings.

4. Establishing Clear Role Definitions for SROs

• Role clarity reduces the risk of criminalizing normal adolescent behaviors while ensuring safety when necessary.

Working Ahead

Zero-tolerance policies continue to play a significant role in school safety, but research shows that many serious incidents are predictable long before they occur. This study demonstrates that behavioral history, absenteeism and classroom conduct patterns are among the strongest predictors of zero-tolerance violations.

For SROs, understanding these indicators opens the door to proactive engagement, relationship-based policing and strategic prevention efforts. By partnering with school staff, emphasizing early intervention and focusing on data-informed practices, SROs can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe incidents while strengthening trust and safety within the school community.

The findings emphasize a powerful message: Prevention works, especially when SROs are equipped with the right information, strong partnerships and student-centered strategies.
