Training Focus: Building EMDR Skills for Clinical Practice

Bellevue University Students Receive NCA Scholarships

Bellevue University recognizes two of its students who received scholarships from the Nebraska Counseling Association at the organization’s 2026 Spring Conference. Chrystol Spraling and Cassie Wistrom earned two of the four awards presented to student members.

Scholarships Awarded at April Conference

The Nebraska Counseling Association presented the scholarships during its conference on April 24 at Bellevue University. The event brought together counseling and mental health professionals and included sessions on practice, ethics, and assessment. The association awards scholarships each year to support students who pursue counseling education and training.

Preparing Students for Counseling Careers

Spraling and Wistrom are students in Bellevue University’s Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, a CACREP-accredited graduate program aligned with national licensure standards. The program prepares students to pursue licensure through coursework in counseling theory, ethics, assessment, and diagnosis, combined with supervised practicum and internship experiences totaling 700 clinical hours.

Students in the program develop skills in assessment, case conceptualization, diagnosis, and treatment planning, while building competency in multicultural counseling, advocacy, and professional practice. Bellevue University announced today that Program Director and faculty member Rebecca Barnes has been named a recipient of the 2026 Blackboard Exemplary Course Award, a distinction that recognizes outstanding achievement in online course development. Barnes’ course, BMAL 211: Business Communication in a Digital World, is part of Bellevue’s bachelor’s program in Business Management and Leadership. Bellevue University Participates as a National Host Site

Bellevue University’s Freeman/Lozier campus will serve as one of 65 host sites nationwide for TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, a coordinated national livestream event connecting communities across the country—and the only host site in Nebraska. Libraries and institutions nationwide will stream TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, creating local access points for shared civic engagement.

The livestream features more than 15 new TED Talks presented from Philadelphia focused on the evolution of democracy and its future. The symposium takes place as part of activities leading up to America’s 250th anniversary and includes speakers addressing civic participation, leadership, governance, and public life.

Faculty Panel Highlights Civic Leadership and Education

Following the livestream, Bellevue University will host a faculty panel discussion on civic leadership and education as part of the University’s Kirkpatrick Signature Series (KSS). The KSS, considered the intellectual linchpin of a Bellevue University education, is a required undergraduate capstone consisting of nine credit hours across three courses: The Making of the Engaged Citizen, The Engaged Citizen in Action I and The Engaged Citizen in Action II (formerly titled American Vision and Values, Tradition and Change, and Freedom and Responsibility.)

The panel will explore how our country’s founding principles guide active citizenship and community stewardship, the goals of the Kirkpatrick Signature Series. Faculty members will further reflect on how our country’s founding principles, together with education, undergird students’ civic identity, promote engaged citizenship, and reinforce the responsibilities of informed citizens in a strong republic.

More Than 700 Students to Receive Degrees

Bellevue University will award degrees to more than 700 students during its Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 6. Graduates represent undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across the University.

Doors to the Mid‑America Center will open at 8:00 a.m. The ceremony will begin with a processional at 9:10 a.m., followed by the commencement program at 9:30 a.m. The University will provide a livestream option for guests who are unable to attend in person.

According to University Registrar Colette Lewis, Bellevue University conferred 1,815 degrees between Sept. 2025 through April 2026. The University now has more than 70,000 graduates worldwide.

Commencement Speakers

The ceremony will feature Dr. Bill Lydiatt, CEO of Clarkson Institute. Dr. Lydiatt also serves as a professor of surgery at Creighton University and was the 2024–2025 past president of the American Head and Neck Society. His career includes senior leadership roles in healthcare administration, clinical practice, and academic medicine, with a focus on expanding access to care, improving quality outcomes, and developing organizational leadership.

This year’s spring student commencement speaker is Shakori D. Colen, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management from Bellevue. Colen grew up in San Diego, California, and has called Omaha, Nebraska, home since 2015. She completed her degree while working full time and raising her son as a single mother. 

In her address titled “Right On Time,” Colen will reflect on her return to college while balancing full-time work, online coursework, and family responsibilities. She will share how she navigated her academic journey while advocating for her son after his autism diagnosis and how those experiences shaped her approach to education and leadership.

Doctoral Hooding and Additional Commencement Activities

In addition to the Spring Commencement ceremony, Bellevue University will host a reception honoring its doctoral students on Friday, June 5, on the University’s main campus in the Margre H. Durham Student Center, 1008 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska. The reception will feature formal remarks and provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and guests to mingle.

Doctoral students will be formally hooded during the Saturday commencement ceremony.

A Breakthrough National Championship

Bellevue University Esports secured a milestone victory by capturing the program’s first Apex Legends national championship at the Octane Collegiate League Season 4: Championship, known as the Queen City Championship. The Bruins defeated the nation’s top collegiate programs in the only Apex Legends league officially licensed by Electronic Arts.

The title continues a strong championship tradition for Bellevue Esports. Earlier this season, the Bruins claimed a national title at the University of Kentucky Bluegrass Showdown in Overwatch 2, adding to a previous Bluegrass Showdown championship in 2024. The Apex Legends victory represents the program’s third national championship overall.

Consistency Leads to the Biggest Win

The Bruins entered the 2025–26 season ranked No. 2 in the preseason power rankings and remained among the nation’s top teams throughout the year. Bellevue placed fourth in the Stage 1 (Fall) Finals and second in the Stage 2 (Spring) Finals while accumulating enough points to qualify for the national championship.

At the Queen City Championship, Bellevue made its intentions clear early. The Bruins dominated Saturday group play with two first-place finishes and advanced to the Championship Sunday as the No. 1 overall seed in a field featuring the top 30 teams in the country.

Championship Sunday Delivers the Title

Championship Sunday used a match-point format, requiring teams to reach 60 points before becoming eligible to win the title with a first-place finish. After a 20th-place result in Game 1, Bellevue responded with a decisive Game 2 win and surged up the standings.

By Game 4, Bellevue became the first team to reach match point following a 3-vs-1 finish by team captain Jason “Jukezy” Zajac. In Game 6, Bellevue and Fisher College both entered on match point. The Bruins eliminated Fisher in the final engagement to secure the Apex Legends national championship.

Advancing Knowledge of Nebraska’s Fungal Biodiversity

Mia Arnold presented findings from the Nebraska Fungi Sequencing Project, a collaborative initiative between Bellevue University and Nebraska Game and Parks. The project documents fungal biodiversity across Nebraska using modern DNA sequencing techniques. Through field collection, laboratory analysis, and genomic comparison, the research team has identified numerous species, including previously undocumented fungi. Bellevue University instructor Erica Wright has published The Museum of Unusual Occurrence, marking the start of a new mystery series set in the fictional town of Wyndale, Florida. The novel follows Aly Orlean, who returns to her hometown after inheriting a museum filled with unusual exhibits. As Aly works to manage the museum, care for her teenage sister, and maintain her business, she discovers a body placed inside one of the exhibits, drawing her into a murder investigation.

Inspiration Behind the Setting and Story

Wright shaped the story’s setting after researching a real Florida town known for its association with psychic practices. While the location and characters are fictional, the novel draws on her interest in museums, place, and structure. Predictors of Zero Tolerance Policy Violations: Evidence to Strengthen School-Police Partnerships

Zero-tolerance policies were originally designed to create safe learning environments by mandating severe consequences for certain behavior, including weapons possession, drug offenses and acts of violence. Overtime,owever, educators, policymakers and school safety practitioners have raised concerns about the unintended consequences of such policies, particularly their effects on marginalized student groups and their contribution to exclusionary discipline practices.

For school resource officers, understanding the individuals most at risk for zero-tolerance violations is essential. Predictive indicators can help SROs intervene earlier, support struggling students, and engage proactively rather than reactively. Despite the volume of national discussion around zero tolerance, relatively little empirical research identifies specific predictor variables that can guide early-warning and prevention strategies inside schools.

This article highlights key findings from a doctoral dissertation study examining predictors of zero-tolerance violations, with direct implications for school safety practice. The results offer SROs actionable strategies for daily operations, including identifying patterns, enhancing communication with school staff and improving student outcomes through prevention-focused approaches.

Purpose & Methods

The study was designed to answer three core questions:

1. What behavioral, academic or demographic factors predict the likelihood of a student committing a zero-tolerance offense?
    
2. How do the predictors differ between middle school and high school students?
    
3. How can SROs and school personnel use the predictors to strengthen prevention efforts?
    

Understanding the behavioral predictors of zero-tolerance violations enables SROs to collaborate with administrators, counselors and teachers to identify students who may require additional support before the behavior escalates.

The study uses archival data from a mid-sized suburban school district. The dataset includes:

• Student demographics (grade level, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic indicators).
   
• Attendance records.
   
• Prior behavioral infractions.
   
• Classroom and school discipline reports.
   
• Zero-tolerance outcomes.

A quantitative statistical model (logistic regression) is used to determine which variables are most strongly associated with zero-tolerance violations. The key variables analyzed include:

• Prior suspensions.
   
• Detentions.
   
• Classroom behavior referrals.
   
• Teacher notes on conduct.
   
• Chronic absenteeism.
   
• Grade level and age.
   
• Socioeconomic indicators.
   
• Special education status.

While the detailed statistics are available in the full dissertation, this article focuses on the findings with the greatest value for school safety practitioners.

Key Findings

1. Prior Behavior Is the Strongest Predictor

Students included in the study with a history of disciplinary incidents were found to be significantly more likely to commit zero-tolerance violations. Repeated classroom disruptions, ongoing disrespect or defiance incidents, aggressive or verbal conflicts, and previous suspensions or administrative referrals were found to be highly predictive of zero-tolerance violations. While past behavior does not ensure zero-tolerance incidents will occur, it is an early warning indicator. SROs can use prior behavior to identify students who may benefit from mentorship or intervention.

2. Chronic Absenteeism Strongly Predicts Risk

Students with high absenteeism, both excused and unexcused, were more likely to violate zero-tolerance policies. Notable attendance patterns included students missing more than 10 percent of school days, frequent tardiness and repeated early dismissals. Among the examined population, chronic absenteeism often overlapped with other risk factors like disengagement, academic frustration and school avoidance. SROs, therefore, should treat attendance as a safety indicator; students who rarely attend school often struggle with social and behavioral expectations upon return, creating opportunities for conflict.

3. Classroom Behavior Referrals Are a Key Early Indicator

Referrals for persistent talking out or refusal to follow directions, classroom disruption, oppositional behavior and minor physical conflicts with peers correlated strongly with later zero-tolerance violations. The low-level behaviors were often precursors to more serious conduct issues, highlighting the fact that even minor referrals reveal patterns. SROs can map behavior patterns with administrators and use them to target early intervention.

4. Middle School Students Are Different From High School Students

The study found important age-level differences. For middle school students, impulsivity-related behaviors were more predictive, peer conflict was more common and emotional-regulation challenges played a larger role than for high school students. High schoolers involved in zero-tolerance incidents were likely to exhibit absenteeism, academic struggles and behavioral issues due to off-campus influences and social group involvement (peer pressure, older peers). SROs must therefore recognize that their intervention strategies should be age specific. Middle school students need proactive relationship-building and conflict resolution training. High school students benefit from mentorship, attendance interventions and targeted support around peer influences.

5. Demographics Should Be Used Selectively

Some demographic variables showed statistical correlations consistent with national data, but the study results emphasized they should never be used as predictors in isolation. Instead, behavioral, attendance, social indicators and other contextual factors should guide SRO decision-making and interventions.

Implications for School Resource Officers

This study offers the following actionable steps that SROs can use immediately to improve school safety:

1. Use Data to Identify At-Risk Students Early

• SROs should collaborate weekly or monthly with:
   i. School administrators.
   ii. Data teams.
   iii. School counselors.
   iv. Behavioral specialists.
   
• Key data SROs can request or participate in reviewing:
   i. Attendance reports.
   ii. Discipline summaries.
   iii. Patterns of classroom referrals.
   iv. Prior-year conduct data.
   
• The approach helps SROs focus prevention efforts on students showing early warning signs.

2. Develop Targeted Mentorship Opportunities

• Students with repeated referrals or absenteeism benefit from:
   i. Informal check-ins.
   ii. “Coffee with a cop”-style conversations.
   iii. Positive reinforcement for small successes.
   iv. Guidance on conflict resolution.
   
• When SROs build trust early, they reduce the likelihood of escalation.

3. Strengthen School-Police Communication

• SROs should help ensure:
   i. Teachers know when to involve the SRO versus when to use internal discipline channels.
   ii. Administrators share relevant behavioral patterns.
   iii. SROs understand the school’s discipline philosophy.
   
• Research shows that schools with strong communication have relatively few severe incidents.

4. Support Alternatives to Zero-Tolerance Responses

• While some situations require immediate action, many students benefit from alternatives, such as:
   i. Restorative practices.
   ii. Social-emotional learning interventions.
   iii. Behavior intervention plans.
   iv. Multi-tiered support systems.
   v. Peer mediation.
   
• SROs play an important role in connecting students to these options.

5. Create an Intervention Plan for High-Risk Patterns

• Focus on students exhibiting multiple predictors, such as:
   i. Prior incidents.
   ii. Attendance problems.
   iii. Behavioral referrals.
   
• SROs should coordinate a multidisciplinary support plan with:
   i. Counselors.
   ii. Parents.
   iii. Teachers.
   iv. Coaches or mentors.
   v. School administration.
   
• A team-based approach has been shown to reduce severe incidents dramatically.

• Role clarity reduces the risk of criminalizing normal adolescent behaviors while ensuring safety when necessary.

Working Ahead

Zero-tolerance policies continue to play a significant role in school safety, but research shows that many serious incidents are predictable long before they occur. This study demonstrates that behavioral history, absenteeism and classroom conduct patterns are among the strongest predictors of zero-tolerance violations.

For SROs, understanding these indicators opens the door to proactive engagement, relationship-based policing and strategic prevention efforts. By partnering with school staff, emphasizing early intervention and focusing on data-informed practices, SROs can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe incidents while strengthening trust and safety within the school community.

The findings emphasize a powerful message: Prevention works, especially when SROs are equipped with the right information, strong partnerships and student-centered strategies.

About Doug Rausch

Doug Rausch serves as the Maenner Endowed Chair and as an associate professor and program director for the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Cybersecurity programs at Bellevue University’s College of Science and Technology. He teaches courses in security architecture and controls, network security, risk management, penetration testing, and digital forensics.

Rausch brings more than 30 years of professional experience to the classroom, including 25 years as an Air Force communications and cyber operations officer and eight years as a cybersecurity consultant. He has taught at Bellevue University since 2014. Trish Siedlik is the Women’s Volleyball Head Coach at Bellevue University and Assistant Athletic Director. She holds a 664-221 career record and ranks among the top active NAIA coaches in wins and winning percentage.

Bellevue University’s participation in the CCBA 2026 National Conference reflects its long-standing commitment to building partnerships that connect education to opportunity. Have you ever tried growing native plants or setting up a native garden and found that some plants grow slow or not at all? The issue may not be your lack of a green thumb, but rather that the microbes and fungi in the soil may not have been established well.

In a recent publication, the BU science team found that the establishment of a healthy soil microbiome and mycobiome in the first four to seven weeks after planting seeds is important for the initial germination and growth of the native grass Bouteloua (commonly known as sideoats grama). If there is an early disruption of the microbiome (called dysbiosis), this will lead to slower growth of the grass and allows for potential plant pathogens to establish themselves. This is similar to your need for a healthy gut or skin microbiome to keep you healthy. The study was just published this week in PLOS One:

Both bacteria and fungi are important in setting up the right plant environment, but it appears from the study that bacteria are involved in the initial establishment of beneficial conditions, which sets the stage for a robust fungal and plant seedling development. The study compared both planted and not planted soil and sterile (autoclaved) versus non-sterile soil and their impact on the growth of the native grass. The soil metagenome and its impact on the Bouteluoa growth was monitored for 7 weeks under controlled greenhouse conditions.

The impact of soil bacteria and fungi on agricultural crop plants is currently of great research interest, as soil quality is critical to food production for a growing global population. An estimated one-third of the world’s topsoil is already gone, and the rest could erode away within 60 years, according to a 2014 report by the United Nations. Reversing this trend is a daunting task, which will take a significant amount of time, so sustainable soil practices to maintain good soil health is imperative.

Microorganisms play a crucial role in the soil nutrient cycling process, and the loss of a diverse microbiome leads to problems with soil depletion and nutrient loss. Sustainable, natural soil management needs to include a better understanding and management of the soil microbes that help to improve the soil chemistry. A growing amount of research is becoming available on the soil microbiome impact on crops, however very little has been studied on native plants and non-food crops. Nevertheless, native plant areas provide important ecosystem services and biodiversity.

Our newest publication in PLOS One presents the work of BU science graduates Alisiara Hobbs and Daisy Ochoa-Rojas, together with Christine E. Humphrey, who was a visiting summer student, under the guidance of Drs. John Kyndt and Tyler Moore.

Obtaining and analyzing a large amount of sequencing data and performing comparative analysis of the hundreds of bacterial and fungal species can be a tedious and challenging endeavor. The students spend many hours of their student research work optimizing the DNA extraction and analyzing sequencing data. In the end, under­standing these microbiome-plant relationships in native Bouteluoa curtipentula opens up possibilities for incorporating target strains that help the colonization and growth of this native grass in restored native habitats. Soil microbial health is important for native plant establishment in urban or prairie settings, and microbial optimization in the case of Bouteloua or other native plants could help their long-term establishment.

According to University Registrar Colette Lewis, Bellevue University conferred 1,326 degrees between April 30, 2025 and Sept. 30, 2025. The University now boasts over 70,000 graduates worldwide.

The ceremony will feature Terry Kroeger, Chairman and CEO of Smith Kroeger, a full-service Omaha-based advertising agency. A former publisher of the Omaha World-Herald, Kroeger grew Smith Kroeger fourfold since acquiring it in 2019 and recently expanded the agency by merging with RCG, making the combined firm one of the Midwest’s leading creative and media firms.

This year’s student commencement speaker is Dr. Patience Mudundulu, who earned her Doctor of Business Administration from Bellevue. Born in Lusaka, Zambia, and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, Mudundulu worked alongside her family cleaning homes and offices to support her education.

She now serves as Sr. Global Go-to-Market Leader for Agentic AI at Amazon Web Services and as an adjunct professor of AI and Machine Learning at City Colleges of Chicago, using her skills and knowledge to support education and opportunity for immigrant and underrepresented communities.

Learning About the Military Community

Bellevue University President Dr. Mary Hawkins and Vice President for Government and Military Affairs Russ Lane have been selected to serve as Honorary Commanders at Offutt Air Force Base. They were officially inducted during a ceremony held on January 21. 

The Honorary Commander Program builds partnerships between Offutt Air Force Base and community leaders. Through the program, participants learn about the mission and operations of the U.S. Air Force and help strengthen community connections. The program also allows commanders to seek input and support from civic leaders on military and community matters.

As Honorary Commanders, Dr. Hawkins and Lane will serve as liaisons between the base and the community, representing the education sector along with participants from business, civic organizations, and other fields. Dr. Hawkins has been matched with Lt. Col. P.J. Madden, Commander of the 338th Combat Training Squad, while Lane has been matched with Col. David C. Leaumont, Commander of the 95th Wing & NAOC. 

The annual award recognizes a community member or student who demonstrates outstanding ethical leadership through their professional and community service across the Bellevue, Omaha and Lincoln areas.

Past recipients have included a young professional who directs after-school programs, a business owner involved with the local school board, and the founder of a nonprofit focused on grief support.

Bellevue University will join other area nonprofits this month and participate in #GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement, on Tuesday, Dec. 2. 

This year, contributions made to Bellevue University will go toward funding scholarships for students enrolled in Bellevue’s undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs.

The Bellevue University Library will host a Meditation and Stress Relief Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. 

The event will take place in Room 480 of the Freeman/Lozier Library on the University’s main campus. 

Presenter Genevieve Williams will lead the session covering the use of meditation for stress relief. Attendees will learn about grounding, establishing an anchor, and practicing with the RAIN method. The program will include a guided meditation, a reflective writing exercise, and a Q&A segment. 

The Lunch and Learn is free and open to the public. Parking is available in Lots A and B. Registration is not required, but attendees may sign up in advance at https://bellevue.libcal.com/event/15084365.

The Bellevue University Library Pop-Up Shop Vendor Event is still scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Freeman/Lozier Library, 1028 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska. The event is free to attend. Purchases are only necessary if an individual chooses to buy something from a vendor.

The Bellevue University Library invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to attend its upcoming Lunch and Learn presentation, Discover the Buzz About Bees!, featuring Nancy Scott of Green Bellevue. The event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. CST in Room 480 of the Freeman/Lozier Library, 1028 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska.

Scott will present on the lives of honeybees and native bees, the plants they use, and their role in food systems and ecosystems. Attendees will also learn steps they can take in their yards to support bees and hear about Bellevue’s Bee City USA program.

Scott serves on the Green Bellevue Board of Directors and co-chairs the Bee City USA Committee. She is a Nebraska Certified Nurseryman, Master Gardener, beekeeper, and was the first Bellevue gardener to have a yard certified by the National Wildlife Federation.

The Lunch and Learn is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in Lots A and B. Registration is not required, but attendees may sign up in advance at https://bellevue.libcal.com/event/15105102.

The Bellevue University Library will host a pop-up shop vendor event on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The pop-up is open to students, staff, and the community and will be held at the Freeman/Lozier Library, 1028 Bruin Blvd., Bellevue, Nebraska.

“Our goal is to facilitate and promote local businesses and independent organizations to our University and local communities,” said Jessica Omer, Circulation Librarian. 

Vendors for the Oct. 23 event include:

• The Book Nook – Mini adult book fair
• Diamonds From Heaven - Diamond painting pictures, bookmarks, magnets and other items
• Animania - Anime and decor merchandise (scrolls, figures and plushies)

Borrowers seeking direct assistance from the Department of Education will not be able to access it. Students applying for funding, including federal loans or loan forgiveness, updating their information, or managing repayment plans may experience processing delays.

Veterans and Military Learners

Current members of the military whose Department of Defense education assistance has been approved should not experience any impact. 

For Veteran students, most GI Bill® benefits are expected to continue without interruption. But call center support, including the GI Bill hotline, is suspended.
