Bellevue University Event Explored Real-World Threat Response with Newtown Officer

Bellevue University hosted Sergeant Will Chapman of the Newtown Police Department as the keynote speaker for its Security in the Heartland event on Friday, Sept. 12.

Sponsored by Bellevue University’s Master of Science in Threat Assessment and Management program, the event featured Sgt. Chapman’s account of the Newtown Police Department’s response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14, 2012. The incident resulted in the deaths of 20 students and six adults. Chapman discussed the events of that day and how threat response practices have changed since then.

Greg Allen, Associate Professor and instructor in the emergency management and threat programs at Bellevue University, said the presentation included information relevant to those responsible for identifying, responding to, and managing threats.

Bellevue University’s Threat Assessment and Management master’s program is offered online and focuses on risk analysis, crisis response planning, team coordination, and communication during high-pressure situations. It is designed for professionals working in public safety, education, and business.
