Bellevue University Hosts Holocaust Remembrance Event with Documentary Screening
Bellevue University invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to a Holocaust Remembrance Event on Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. in the Criss Auditorium, inside the Hitchcock Humanities Center (1040 Bruin Blvd. Bellevue, Nebraska).
In recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 24, 2025) and Jewish American Heritage Month (May), the Bellevue University Library will host a screening of The Books He Didn’t Burn, introduced by Bellevue University Professor Margaret Smith.
“This powerful documentary examines the books preserved in Adolf Hitler’s private library, offering a critical look at the societal forces that enabled tyranny—an analysis that remains profoundly relevant today,” said Robin Bernstein, Senior Director of University Library Services.
The film follows American historian Timothy Ryback as he explores Adolf Hitler’s personal book collection, shedding light on the intellectual influences that shaped Nazi ideology. At the time of Hitler’s death, his private library contained more than 16,000 books, with 1,200 volumes now preserved at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Hosted by the Freeman/Lozier Library, this event offers an opportunity for reflection and education, honoring the memory of the Holocaust while examining the connections between history, ideology, and literature.
