First-Generation Students Gather at Bellevue University for AIM Institute’s TRIO Day

AIM Institute’s Upward Bound program will hold its TRIO Day event at Bellevue University’s campus this March. TRIO Day brings together first-generation high school students to learn about college pathways, engage with peers, and participate in activities centered on academic and career preparation.
Keynote speaker Garry Clark will share his personal experience as a TRIO participant. His background includes moving frequently during childhood and overcoming family challenges before attending Dana College, where he competed in track. His presentation will set the stage for the event’s breakout sessions.
“TRIO Day is a chance for our students to see what’s possible, gain inspiration from alumni like Garry Clark, and connect with peers and mentors who understand their journey,” said Charles Kaup, AIM Institute Director of Education. “We want every student to leave knowing that college is achievable, no matter their background.”
Breakout activities include a student panel, a T-shirt design project, a community service activity in partnership with the Nebraska Humane Society, and a sensory room for focused reflection. TRIO Day supports students as they prepare for education after high school and learn about opportunities available to them.
