A More Complex Global Security Environment

Throughout the evening, General Keane discussed that the United States faces one of the most significant security challenges in modern history, driven by growing cooperation among China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

He described the convergence of those nations as a fundamental shift from previous geopolitical rivalries and one that requires sustained attention from American leaders and citizens alike.

"I am not exaggerating when I'm telling you this is the most serious and dangerous challenge in terms of global security and our own national security we have faced since World War II," General Keane said.

He also highlighted the growing importance of cyber warfare, disinformation campaigns and influence operations, warning that future conflicts may increasingly extend beyond traditional battlefields and into critical infrastructure, technology systems and public opinion.

The Importance of Civic Education

General Keane praised Bellevue University's commitment to civic education through the Kirkpatrick Signature Series and related initiatives.

He emphasized the importance of helping younger generations better understand American history, constitutional principles and democratic institutions at a time when fewer students receive that education in traditional settings.

"I absolutely applaud the civic education you're exposing people to," he said. "The constitutional history that you're exposing them to, and the values of this great country, are so important."

General Keane noted that informed citizens are better equipped to recognize misinformation and understand complex national and international issues.

Lessons from Global Hotspots

During his remarks and during a moderated conversation with Bellevue University Board of Directors member Ryan Downs, General Keane discussed current conflicts and tensions involving Ukraine, China and Iran.

He outlined his views on the war in Ukraine, the strategic competition between the United States and China, and ongoing instability in the Middle East. He also addressed the increasing role of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, in modern conflict.

General Keane described drone warfare as one of the most significant military developments in recent years, noting how rapidly technology is changing battlefield operations and defense planning.

He stressed that innovation, collaboration with the private sector and continued investment in defense capabilities will be critical to maintaining U.S. competitiveness and deterrence in the years ahead.

Confidence in America's Future

While much of General Keane's presentation focused on pressing global challenges, he concluded on an optimistic note, expressing confidence in the resilience of the United States and the American people.

Drawing on examples from the nation's history, including World War II and the decades that followed, he argued that America's strengths extend beyond military power.

"The secret sauce of the United States of America is not its military," General Keane said. "It's economic prowess. It's the American people."

General Keane encouraged attendees to remain engaged, informed and optimistic about the country's future.

"We have our challenges, and they're formidable," he said. "But none of our challenges compare to what we faced in World War II."

Bellevue University proudly promotes the American dream and an understanding of what it means to be an active and engaged American citizen. Each year, the Signature Event presents opinion makers to community leaders, sparking thoughtful on issues of national interest and importance.
