Johnna Hargens-Brown to Present on Scholarship Equity at EmpowerED

Color-10

Johnna Hargens-Brown, Director of Scholarships and Grants and Financial Aid Supervisor at Bellevue University, will present at the EmpowerED 2024 Conference, organized by the National Scholarship Providers Association (NSPA). The conference will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, from Oct. 15-18.

The theme for this year’s EmpowerED conference is "Shaping an Equitable Future through Scholarship Excellence." Attendees will have access to over 100 sessions led by experts, focusing on topics such as student support strategies, scholarship policies, legal considerations, and methods to evaluate the impact of scholarship programs.

Hargens-Brown will lead a session on equity in the scholarship application and review process. She will share her knowledge and experience in developing practices that ensure all students have an equal chance to receive scholarship support.

“Ensuring equity in scholarship programs is crucial to providing all students with the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background,” said Hargens-Brown. “I’m honored to contribute to this dialogue and offer strategies that can help scholarship providers make a meaningful impact.”

With over 17 years of experience at Bellevue University, Hargens-Brown manages the university's scholarship and grant programs. She works across departments to ensure a streamlined scholarship application process and the sustainability of renewable awards. Beyond her work at Bellevue, Hargens-Brown is involved with NSPA, where she serves on the New Member Welcome Committee, mentors professionals, and reviews submissions for the Scholarship Provider of the Year Award.

The National Scholarship Providers Association hosts an annual event that brings together scholarship professionals from across the country to empower the scholarship community with the knowledge, skills and resources to strengthen the impact of scholarships.
