Military Vet Brings His Experience to Bellevue Classrooms
Dr. Darrell Aubrey served in the U.S. Army for more than 30 years, but he didn’t stop there. A lifelong learner, he earned his doctorate degree in Management and Organizational Leadership, became an adjunct instructor at Bellevue University and now teaches full time in the College of Business.
“The transition felt organic. I already had a long-standing relationship with the University, and teaching had always been a core part of my leadership responsibilities in the military,” Dr. Aubrey said. “Moving from mentoring future military leaders to educating future supply chain professionals just felt like a natural evolution of my purpose.”
Finding the Intersection of Logistics, Leadership and a Supportive Environment
Dr. Aubrey spent the majority of his military career – 28 years – as a logistician. “I held roles at every level — from tactical logistics on the ground to strategic-level planning for global operations,” he said. “My final assignment in uniform was as an Associate Professor in the U.S. Army War College, where I taught logistics and theater operations. It was there that I discovered how much I enjoy educating others.” In particular, he found that building systems, solving problems, and developing leaders really excited him. With his combination of expertise and education, the Texas resident now teaches online courses in supply chain management and logistics.
When he first explored teaching options, Dr. Aubrey said Bellevue University stood out for its flexibility. “This had been especially important while I was still on active duty — and the University also stood out for its incredible level of support. From day one, I never felt like I was just a number.”
Whenever Dr. Aubrey had a question or a suggestion, he said the leaders in his department always made time to respond. “Bellevue University doesn't just care about the students — it genuinely values the instructors, too,” he said.
He said the Bellevue University faculty, administration and staff are genuinely some of the most welcoming and helpful professionals he’s ever worked with. “There's a real sense of community and shared purpose here. I especially enjoy attending graduation — it's a chance to celebrate my students' achievements and reconnect with colleagues who've become good friends over the years,” he said.

Whether we're discussing supply chain disruptions or ethical procurement, I draw from a career of operational challenges and solutions to help students bridge theory with practice.”
Bringing Tangible Experience to the Classroom
Having worked hands-on in logistics over more than three decades of drastically changing technology, Dr. Aubrey says his military background shapes everything he does in the classroom. “I bring real-world experience, high expectations and a commitment to teamwork and accountability,” he said. “I incorporate case studies from my time in service and from current events in global logistics. Whether we're discussing supply chain disruptions or ethical procurement, I draw from a career of operational challenges and solutions to help students bridge theory with practice.”
He also emphasizes leadership as much as he can with his students. “Having led teams through combat deployments, disaster relief operations and large-scale logistical movements, I understand the complexity, urgency and human impact behind supply chain decisions,” he said. “I also bring the perspective of someone who's lived the consequences of poor planning—and the rewards of innovative thinking.”
Dr. Aubrey’s own personal philosophy impacts how he interacts with students. “I consider myself a lifelong learner and believe education should be practical, purposeful and personal,” he said.”I also believe in the power of human connection — whether it's in a discussion forum or a video call. My goal is to make every student feel seen, heard and supported.”
In his role as Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain and Logistics Management, Dr. Aubrey also helps shape curriculum to meet today's global challenges, ensuring students graduate not only with knowledge but with confidence to lead.
