Dr. John Kyndt, Professor of Microbiology and Sustainability at Bellevue University, has been selected as one of this year's recipients of the Nebraska EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) grants for Undergraduate Research Experience in Small Colleges and Universities. The award will facilitate Dr. Kyndt's research endeavor titled, "Nebraska Salt Marsh Microbiome: an exploration of spatial and temporal microbial diversity".

The project spearheaded by Dr. Kyndt aims to unravel the mysteries of microbial life within the Nebraska Salt Marsh areas, remnants of ancient oceans that once blanketed the middle of North America. Dr. Kyndt's proposal underscores the importance of conserving these environments while also investigating threats posed by viral contaminants to plant, animal, and human health.

"Through our preliminary studies, we have already uncovered the uniqueness of microbial composition within the Nebraska Salt Marshes," said Kyndt, whose initial findings were published in a 2021 study. "Now, with the support of EPSCoR funding, we have the opportunity to delve deeper into understanding the spatial and temporal variations of these environments throughout an entire year."

The research project not only addresses critical questions concerning habitat and groundwater conservation but also holds promise in preventing environmental pathogens from evolving into potential disease threats. This initiative provides hands-on field sampling experience for undergraduate students, equipping them with skills in genome sequencing and metagenomic data analysis.

"The Nebraska Salt Marshes, though appearing desolate in early spring, serve as ecosystems teeming with microbial life," said Kyndt, emphasizing the significance of this research endeavor.

The Undergraduate Research Experience grant program, established by EPSCoR, aims to offer research opportunities for selected students interested in innovative projects. Funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) infrastructure grant to Nebraska EPSCoR, this program fosters the next generation of scientists and researchers.

If you are a student interested in working on this project, feel free to contact Dr. Kyndt at jkyndt@bellevue.edu.
